Formation of magnetic moments in crystalline, quasicrystalline, and liquid Al-Mn alloys

J. Häfner、M. Krajčı́1998-02-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

We present ab initio investigations of the formation of magnetic moments in crystalline, quasicrystalline, and liquid Al-Mn alloys. We find that the appearance of local moments on the Mn sites is controlled by a local Stoner criterion. In the stable crystalline compound ${\mathrm{Al}}_{6}\mathrm{Mn}$ strong $\mathrm{A…

Stepping Backward to Improve Assessment of PCB Congener Toxicities

Larry G. Hansen1998-02-01Environmental Health Perspectives

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are ubiquitous global contaminants that have been intensively investigated for three decades. They are broad-acting toxicants occurring in complex mixtures and accurate risk assessment has proven to be elusive.Focusing on a limited set of end points and emphasizing a fixed set of congen…

Solid-State Voltammetry — Analytical Prospects

Paweł J. Kulesza、James A. Cox1998-02-01Electroanalysis

The present review discusses some current issues related to the principles and analytical aspects of electrochemical studies (typically done at room temperature) of solid, rigid or semirigid (nonfluid) systems in the absence of a liquid solution phase. Representative examples include redox and conducting organic polym…

Phase Behavior of Binary Homopolymer/Diblock Blends: Temperature and Chain Length Dependence

Philipp K. Janert、M. Schick1998-02-01Macromolecules

The phase behavior of binary blends of A homopolymer and symmetric AB diblock copolymer is studied within mean-field theory. The occurrence of lamellar, hexagonal, and body-centered-cubic phases is examined in the weak to intermediate segregation regime and over a wide range of homopolymer length relative to that of t…

Frustrated Structure Induced on Ferroelectric Smectic Phases in Banana-Shaped Molecular System

Junji Watanabe、Teruki Niori、Tomoko Sekine 等 4 位作者1998-02-01Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

We found that the frustration, i.e., unusual density modulation, is induced on ferroelectric SmA b and HexB b phases composed of achiral banana-shaped molecules. The frustration takes place along the bent direction of molecules, with four or five molecules included in each inversion unit. Such an unusual frustrated st…

Spunlaced Non-Woven Fabric Technology And Its Recent Development In China

Man Ching Frankie Ng、Winson Y.W. Kho1998-02-01Research Journal of Textile and Apparel

The earliest concept of spunlacing (also known as hydroentanglement): using water jets to entangle fibres to form non-woven fabrics, was conceived as early as 1950s. Like other nonwoven fabrics, spunlaced non-woven fabrics are not made of yams, but directly from fibers or filaments which are laid by web forming machin…

Modelling the Settling, Dissolution and Non-Uniform Nucleation Kinetics in a 150-Litre Forced Circulation Crystallizer

Sean K. Bermingham、Andreas M. Neumann、Joost P. Muusze 等 5 位作者1998-02-01Particle & Particle Systems Characterization

Experiments on a pilot-scale 150-litre forced circulation crystallizer with external circulation flow rates of 2 and 3 l/s revealed a high sensitivity of the product crystal size distribution for this operational variable. It is believed that a change in the circulation flow rate influences (1) the nucleation rate, wh…

[001] Surface Structure in SrTiO3 — Atomistic Study

E. Heifets、Simon Dorfman、David Fuks 等 5 位作者1998-02-01Surface Review and Letters

Thin superconducting films attract great attention as a promising material for plenty of applications. The surface determines most of the physical properties of these films. We studied the polarization effect for the [001] surface of perovskite ABO 3 superconducting crystals on the example of SrTiO 3 . Optimization of…

A new recycling system for expanded polystyrene using a natural solvent. Part 1. A new recycling technique

Tsutomu Noguchi、Mayumi Miyashita、Yasuhito Inagaki 等 4 位作者1998-02-01Packaging Technology and Science

A new recycling technique has been developed which uses a natural solvent, d limonene, to shrink expanded polystyrene (EPS). d-Limonene is a natural vegetable oil which is extracted from the rinds of citrus fruits and is a good solvent of EPS. Limonene has almost the same solubility as toluene at room temperature. Thi…

Sensitization and Tunneling Corrosion of Austenitic Type 347 Stainless Steel

Chiara Teodoro、Stephan Wolynec1998-02-01CORROSION

Sensitization of type 347 (UNS S34700) austenitic stainless steel (SS) samples removed from forged bars was investigated using the electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) method and the weight-loss technique of ASTM A 262, Practice B. A normal and a low-carbon steel were investigated. After solution-anneali…

Diameter and Strength Distributions of Merino Wool in Early Stage Processing

Lijing Wang、Xungai Wang1998-02-01Textile Research Journal

In this paper, we investigate fiber diameter and strength distributions in early-stage processing. We have processed two lots of merino wool from scouring to top finishing. Fiber samples collected at each processing stage are measured for diameter on an optical fiber diameter analyzer, and fiber strength is measured o…

Modeling mass transfer and substrate utilization in the boundary layer of biofilm systems

Harald Horn、D. C. Hempel1998-02-01Water Science & Technology

The use of microelectrodes in biofilm research allows a better understanding of intrinsic biofilm processes. Little is known about mass transfer and substrate utilization in the boundary layer of biofilm systems. One possible description of mass transfer can be obtained by mass transfer coefficients, both on the basis…
