Corrosion Mechanisms for Copper and Silver Objects in Near-Surface Environments

M. B. McNeil、Brenda J. Little1992-01-01Journal of the American Institute for Conservation

The morphology and mineralogy of corrosion products found on copper and silver artifacts recovered from shallow land or water burial are reviewed. Stability diagrams are used to interpret mechanisms for corrosion phenomena with an emphasis on identification of microbiological action.

Analysis of dispersion of carbon black in polymeric melts and its effect on compound properties

Syang‐Peng Rwei、Ica Manas‐Zloczower、Donald L. Feke1992-01-01Polymer Engineering and Science

Abstract The dispersion of carbon black agglomerates within melts of polystyrene and high density polyethylene has been investigated. Analysis of the evolution of the fragment size distribution indicates that a coarse rupturing of the agglomerates occurs during the early stages of the dispersion. This is followed by a…

Antiviral Phloroglucinols from New Zealand Kunzea Species

Stephen J. Bloor1992-01-01Journal of Natural Products

Four acyl-phloroglucinol derivatives showing antiviral activity have been isolated from Kunzea sinclairii and Kunzea ericoides (Myrtaceae) from New Zealand. The structures of these compounds were deduced from analysis of spectral data. Two of these compounds, 1 and 2, are the isomers of isobutyryl methoxyresorcinol. T…

A study of some properties of mineralized turkey leg tendon

S.-H. Lee、Elizabeth A. Page1992-01-01Connective Tissue Research

Several macroscopic physical properties of mineralized turkey leg tendon were measured including wet density, composition, volume fractions of the major components, sonic velocity in three axes, longitudinal modulus and dimensional changes on drying. Where possible the properties were related to density. Typically the…

A comparison of methods for calculating condition index in eastern oysters Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1791)

Julia S. Rainier、Roger Mann1992-01-01W&M Publish (College of William & Mary)

A number of techniques have been reported to estimate condition index in oysters and other bivalve molluscs. We report and compare condition index, estimated by three different methods, for oysters collected from a single reef in the James River, Virginia over a four week period in the summer of 1987. Two indices expr…

Solubility and Solution Behaviour of Chitin and Chitosan

George A. F. Roberts1992-01-01OpenAlex

Chitin is a relatively intractable polymer and despite its structural similarity to cellulose it is insoluble in typical cellulose solvents such as cuprammonium hydroxide (Schweizer's reagent), cupriethylene diamine and Cadoxen. However there are a limited number of solvent systems which may be grouped together in thr…

The origin of crystallographic texture produced during hot deformation in rapidly-quenched NdFeB permanent magnets

Lin Li、C. D. Graham1992-01-011992. Digests of Intermag. International Magnetics Conference

The authors present a model for the development of crystallographic texture by hot deformation in NdFeB magnets produced by rapid solidification. Favourably oriented grains, with their c-axis parallel to the compression axis, grow by mass transport through a Nd-rich liquid grain boundary phase, forming large platelet…

Grain Defect Formation During Directional Solidification of Nickel Base Single Crystals

Tresa M. Pollock、W.H. Murphy、Edward H. Goldman 等 5 位作者1992-01-01OpenAlex

Grain defect formation during solidification of <OOl> nickel base single crystals has been studied in a series of alloys over a wide range of imposed thermal gradients and growth rates. Solute-driven convective instabilities, associated with high levels of Re and W and/or low levels of Ta, promote the formation of "fr…

Al coordination in magnesium aluminosilicate glasses

Paul F. McMillan、R. James Kirkpatrick1992-01-01UCL Discovery (University College London)

High coordinate (five- and sixfold) Si and Al species have been previously observed by MAS NMR techniques in binary silicate and peraluminous aluminosilicate glasses and gels. For liquids along the charge-balanced joins SiO2-MAlO2 or SiO2-M′Al2O4 (M = alkali metal; M′ = alkaline earth), such high coordinate species ha…

On the spark to pseudoglow and glow transition mechanism and discharge detectability

R. Bartnikas、Jaroslav Novák1992-01-01IEEE Transactions on Electrical Insulation

The transition mechanism for spark to pseudoglow and glow discharge is examined and the attending question of discharge detectability in an electrical apparatus is considered. The effect of gap spacing or cavity diameter and overvoltage is discussed in terms of experimental observations and theoretical calculations us…

Factors affecting the wettability of polymer surfaces

M. Yekta-Fard、A. B. Ponter1992-01-01Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology

The inconsistencies in contact angle data presented in the literature can be attributed to a number of factors. The awareness of these factors would allow novice researchers to make meaningful contact angle measurements and interpretations. In this survey the effects of surface roughness and heterogeneity, surface pre…

Structural disorder in hydroxyapatite

Andrea Sänger、W. F. Kuhs1992-01-01Zeitschrift für Kristallographie

Four mineral apatites (three samples of Totenkopf-hydroxyapatite, one sample of Durango-fluorapatite) and a synthetic fluorapatite were analysed as a function of temperature by X-ray and neutron single crystal diffraction mainly to quantify the disorder contribution to the atomic Debye Waller factor (DWF).
