Topologically protected zero modes in twisted bilayer graphene

R. de Gail、M. O. Goerbig、F. Guinea 等 5 位作者2011-07-18Physical Review B

We show that a twisted graphene bilayer can reveal unusual topological properties at low energies, as a consequence of a Dirac-point splitting. These features rely on a symmetry analysis of the electron hopping between the two layers of graphene and we derive a simplified effective low-energy Hamiltonian which capture…

Farhan Rana、Jared H. Strait、Haining Wang 等 4 位作者2011-07-18Physical Review B

Electron-hole generation and recombination rates for plasmon emission and absorption in graphene are presented. The recombination times of carriers due to plasmon emission are found to be in the tens of femtoseconds to hundreds of picoseconds range. The recombination times depend sensitively on the carrier energy, car…

Bias current dependence of spin accumulation signals in a silicon channel detected by a Schottky tunnel contact

Y. Ando、K. Kasahara、K. Yamane 等 9 位作者2011-07-18arXiv

We study the electrical detection of spin accumulation at a ferromagnet-silicon interface, which can be verified by measuring a Hanle effect in three-terminal lateral devices. The device structures used consist of a semiconducting Si channel and a high-quality Schottky tunnel contact. In a low current-bias region, the…

Effect of Layer Stacking on the Electronic Structure of Graphene Nanoribbons

Neerav Kharche、Yu Zhou、Kevin O’Brien 等 5 位作者2011-07-18ACS Nano

The evolution of electronic structure of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) as a function of the number of layers stacked together is investigated using ab initio density functional theory (DFT), including interlayer van der Waals interactions. Multilayer armchair GNRs (AGNRs), similar to single-layer AGNRs, exhibit three cl…

Enhanced Multiple Exciton Generation in Quasi-One-Dimensional Semiconductors

Paul D. Cunningham、Janice E. Boercker、Edward E. Foos 等 7 位作者2011-07-18Nano Letters

The creation of a single electron-hole pair (i.e., exciton) per incident photon is a fundamental limitation for current optoelectronic devices including photodetectors and photovoltaic cells. The prospect of multiple exciton generation per incident photon is of great interest to fundamental science and the improvement…

We present results on quasidiffusion studies in large, 3 inch diameter, 1 inch thick [100] high purity germanium crystals, cooled to 50 mK in the vacuum of a dilution refrigerator, and exposed with 59.5 keV gamma-rays from an Am-241 calibration source. We compare data obtained in two different detector types, with dif…

In this work, we report on the electronic properties of solution-gated field effect transistors (SGFETs) fabricated using large-area graphene. Devices prepared both with epitaxially grown graphene on SiC as well as with chemical vapor deposition grown graphene on Cu exhibit high transconductances, which are a conseque…

High resolution cathodoluminescence hyperspectral imaging of surface features in InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well structures

Jochen Bruckbauer、Paul R. Edwards、Tao Wang 等 4 位作者2011-07-18arXiv

InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) have been studied by using cathodoluminescence hyperspectral imaging with high spatial resolution. Variations in peak emission energies and intensities across trench-like features and V-pits on the surface of the MQWs are investigated. The MQW emission from the region inside tre…

Graphene Transistors Are Insensitive to pH Changes in Solution

Wangyang Fu、Cornelia Nef、Oren Knopfmacher 等 7 位作者2011-07-18Nano Letters

We observe very small gate-voltage shifts in the transfer characteristic of as-prepared graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) when the pH of the buffer is changed. This observation is in strong contrast to Si-based ion-sensitive FETs. The low gate-shift of a GFET can be further reduced if the graphene surface is c…
