We have made a systematic theoretical survey of the competition between ferroelastic and ferroelectric instabilities in the family of halide-based perovskites of formula ${\mathrm{ABX}}_{3}$, where A is an alkali-metal ion, B is a Be, Mg, or Ca ion, and X is a halide ion. Initially we surveyed the whole series of such…

Quantitative surface analysis by XPS: A comparison among different quantitative approaches

C. Battistoni、G. Mattogno、E. Paparazzo1985-06-01Surface and Interface Analysis

Abstract Atomic ratio determinations in a series of pure inorganic compounds have been derived from XPS peak intensity measurements taken by area via the so‐called ‘first principles model’ (FPM) and the ‘elemental sensitivity factors’ (ESF) methods. The two methods show similar degrees of accuracy, with a typical erro…

Steps on surfaces of liquid-crystal blue phase I

P. Pierański、R. Barbet-Massin、P. E. Cladis1985-06-01Physical Review A

Steps corresponding to (110), (211), (310), (222), and (321) facets in monocrystals of blue phase I (BP I) are described. We show that close to equilibrium, surfaces of BP I monocrystals contain facets and rounded parts on which a series of steps can be distinguished. During growth, the round parts are eliminated and…

High temperature ferroelastic phase in LiKSO4crystals

T. Krajewski、T. Breczewslci、P. Piskunowicz 等 4 位作者1985-06-01Ferroelectrics Letters Section

Optical studies of LiKSO4 crystals were performed in polarized 11yh.t within the temperature range from 300 up to 1000 K. The observations confirmed the existence of two phase transitions at about 700 and 940 K respectively. The high-temperature phase between 700 and 940 K was found to be ferroelastic.

Feasibility Study of the Welding of Sic

Thomas J. Moore1985-06-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

In a brief study of the feasibility of welding sintered a‐Sic, solid‐state welding and brazing were investigated. Joint quality was determined solely by microstructural examination. Hot‐pressure welding was shown to be feasible at 1950°C. Diffusion welding and brazing were also successful under hot isostatic pressure…

Mathematical modeling of catalytic converter lightoff. Part III: Prediction of vehicle exhaust emissions and parametric analysis

Se H. Oh、James C. Cavendish1985-06-01AIChE Journal

Abstract The converter warmup model developed previously (Oh and Cavendish, 1985) has been used to simulate the performance of a packed‐bed converter during the cold‐start portion of vehicle emissions tests. Despite the highly transient converter inlet conditions, the model successfully predicts tailpipe mass emission…

H. P. Dhar、Richard E. White、Gary Burnell 等 6 位作者1985-06-01CORROSION

Electrochemical corrosion rates of Cu and Cu-Ni alloys have been measured in oxygenated 0.5M NaCl and in synthetic seawater using the Tafel extrapolation procedure. In addition, Cu corrosion has been measured with the linear polarization procedure. A rotating disk electrode system was used in the measurements with rot…

Surface enhancement factors for Raman scattering at silver electrodes. Role of adsorbate–surface interactions and electronic structure

Michael J. Weaver、Stuart Farquharson、M. A. Tadayyoni1985-06-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

The integrated Raman band intensities for internal vibrational modes of various adsorbates at roughened silver electrodes are combined with surface concentrations obtained electrochemically to yield surface Raman scattering cross sections. These data together with the corresponding bulk-phase Raman intensities provide…

Preparation and Property of Polytellurophene and Polyselenophene

Ryuichi Sugimoto、Katsumi Yoshino、Shigehito Inoue 等 4 位作者1985-06-01Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

Polytellurophene is prepared chemically using FeCl 3 as catalyst at the first time. The electrical conductivity in the doped state is found to be relatively low, 10 -6 S/cm, compared with that in polythiophene. Polyselenophene films prepared by a chemical method are found to indicate similar characteristics with those…

Mathematical modeling of catalytic converter lightoff. Part II: Model verification by engine‐dynamometer experiments

Se H. Oh、James C. Cavendish1985-06-01AIChE Journal

Temperature Field Due to a Moving Heat Source: A Moving Mesh Finite Element Analysis

Zhifeng Kuang、Satya N. Atluri1985-06-01Journal of Applied Mechanics

The transient temperature field (as seen by a moving observer) due to a moving heat source, such as the process zone near a dynamically propagating crack tip or an external agent as in the case of welding, is analyzed by a moving-mesh finite element procedure. The effects of the temperature-dependent material properti…

Amino acid biosynthesis and sodium‐dependent transport in Methanococcus voltae, as revealed by 13C NMR

Irena Ekiel、Ken F. Jarrell、G. Dennis Sprott1985-06-01European Journal of Biochemistry

Of several methanogenic bacteria examined only Methanococcus voltae readily incorporated exogenous amino acids into cell protein. This was easily shown, since growth in the presence of exogenous amino acids resulted in a loss of signal intensities from those carbon atoms normally labelled by [13C]acetate during biosyn…

Atomic Charges and Electron Density Partitioning

E. N. Maslen、Mark A. Spackman1985-06-01Australian Journal of Physics

Atomic charges are derived from two dissimilar methods of partitioning the electron density of diatomic molecules. The results given by both methods are similar, with the exception of those for molecules containing lithium; factors responsible for this discrepancy are explored. The charges derived are correlated close…
