Morphology in thermally oxidized high density polyethylene pipes

Ulf W. Gedde、J.‐F. Jansson、Björn Terselius1987-05-01Polymer Engineering and Science

Abstract In a continuation of previous work (1), the melting and crystallization behavior of the layered oxidized skin on thermally oxidized inner wall surfaces of different high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes was studied. By hot stage polarized light microscopy on 5 μm thick cross‐sections of the skin, melting was…

Pattern Formation in Thermal Convective Nematic Liquid Crystalsi

Shu Chang-Qing、Lin Lei1987-05-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

The amplitude equation for thermal convective nematic liquid crystals is derived from the equations of motion. The appearance of various patterns (normal rolls, undulations, zigzags, etc.) in different parameter regimes is described in a unified manner. The effect of a horizontal magnetic field is included and the cor…

Extinction in the framework of transfer equations for general-type crystals

N. C. Popa1987-05-01Acta Crystallographica Section A Foundations of Crystallography

An improvement of the classical theory of extinction in mosaic crystals is made by starting from the energy transfer equations valid for a general-type crystal according to Zachariasen's [Acta Cryst. (1967), 23, 558-564] classification. Within the assumption that only the integrated intensity of the diffraction peak i…

Properties of Isoprene Rubber Reinforced with Treated Bleached Kraft Cellulosic Fibers or Rayon Fibers

Bo Westerlind、S. Hirose、S. Yano 等 5 位作者1987-05-01International Journal of Polymeric Materials

Both native and regenerated (rayon) cellulosic fibers are potential reinforcing elements in rubbers due to their relatively good mechanical properties, suitable aspect ratio, low cost and low density. The properties of the cellulosic fibers can also be changed fairly easily by chemical treatment. The effects of two tr…

Electron Spin Relaxation in Ferroelastic KH3(SeO3)2

H.‐E. Müller、G. Völkel、W. Brunner 等 5 位作者1987-05-01physica status solidi (b)

Abstract Measurements of the electron spin—lattice relaxation time T 1 and the phase memory time T M of SeO 2 − centres in X‐irradiated single crystals of ferroelastic KH 3 (SeO 3 ) 2 are reported. At temperatures above 11 K the spin—lattice relaxation is governed by a two‐phonon process of optical phonons. Near the p…

Liquid-Phase Hydration of Acrylonitrile to Acrylamide over the Copper–Nickel Alloy Catalysts

Kazuo Sugiyama、Hiroshi Miura、Yoshichika Watanabe 等 5 位作者1987-05-01Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Japan

Abstract The liquid-phase hydration of acrylonitrile to acrylamide has been examined over various metal catalysts at 75 °C. Five metal elements-Cu, Ag, Fe, Co, and Ni-showed the catalytic conversion of acrylonitrile. The Cu and Ag catalysts gave the acrylamide with a 100% selectivity, while the other metals, Fe, Co, a…

Scanning electron microscopy studies of polymer melt devolatilization

Ramon J. Albalák、Zehev Tadmor、Yeshayahu Talmon1987-05-01AIChE Journal

Abstract The devolatilization mechanism of polystyrene was studied by scanning electron microscopy. Strands of molten polystryene, containing 2,300 ppm styrene, and molten polystyrene containing 5% pentane, were extruded into a heated vacuum chamber. The strands were abruptly frozen, then fractured under liquid nitrog…

Mesomorphic Behaviour of N-4-hexadecylpyridinium Chloride

R. Somashekar1987-05-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

In this paper we report the mesomorphic behaviour of anhydrous N-4-hexadecylpyridinium chloride (HDPCI). DTA, X-ray and optical studies show that HDPCI exhibits smectic A phase above 76°C. Existence of lamellar phase in the mixtures of HDPCI and water, is reported using X-ray and optical studies.

Electric Field Induced Phase Transitions in Liquid-Crystalline Blue Phases

F. Porsch、H. Stegemeyer1987-05-01Liquid Crystals

Voltage/temperature phase diagrams of liquid-crystalline blue phase (BP) systems CB 15/M 18 and CB 15/E 9 have been determined by means of polarizing microscopy. Above a certain threshold voltage a field-induced BP occurs which is stable in a region of the U/T diagram between the BPI and BPII.
