Constitutive Equation for Nematic Liquid Crystals under Weak Velocity Gradient Derived from a Molecular Kinetic Equation. II. –Leslie Coefficients for Rodlike Polymers–

Nobu Kuzuu、Masao Doi1984-03-01Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

The Leslie coefficients of the nematic phase of concentrated solutions of rodlike polymers are calculated based on the molecular theory given in the previous paper (Kuzuu and Doi: J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 52 (1983)). The Leslie coefficients are obtained in the form of an asymptotic expansion with respect to the concentratio…

Viscosities, Glass Transition Temperatures, and Microhardness of Y‐Si‐A1‐O‐N Glasses

Stuart Hampshire、R. A. L. Drew、K. H. Jack1984-03-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Y‐Si‐A1‐O‐N glasses containing up to 15 at.% nitrogen were prepared. Comparisons of properties of glasses with the same cation composition but with varying N:O ratios show that glass transition temperature, viscosity, and microhardness all increase with increasing nitrogen content.

A new class of complex water-soluble polyelectrolytes

V.A. Kabanov、А. Б. Зезин1984-03-01Die Makromolekulare Chemie

Water-soluble nonstoichiometric polyelectrolyte complexes (N-PEC) constitute a new class of polyelectrolytes. N-PEC are formed as a result of interaction between oppositely charged polyelectrolytes taken in non-equivalent rations and thus they are macromolecular compounds. An N-PEC particle can be represented as a mac…

Abstract Das Iminoboran t BuB = N t Bu ( 1 ) bildet sich in der Gasphase bei 530°C aus dem Aminoboran Cl( t Bu)B – N( t Bu)SiMe 3 durch Abspaltung von Me 3 SiCl. Das Boran 1 dimerisiert langsam zum Diazadiboretidin [ t BuBN t Bu] 2 ( 2 ). Für Iminoborane typische Reaktionen, nämlich die Ethyloborierung mit BEt 3 , di…

Sintering and Properties of Titanium Diboride Made from Powder Synthesized in a Plasma‐Arc Heater

H. Baumgärtner、R. Steiger1984-03-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The pressureless sintering to near theoretical density of high‐purity titanium diboride powder, produced in a plasma arc from halogen vapor reactants, is described. Physical and mechanical property measurements between 25° and 1400°C are reported for materials densified at T=1800° to 2275°C. Titanium diboride exhibits…

The thermodynamic properties of polytetrafluoroethylene

Suk Fai Lau、Hidematsu Suzuki、Bernhard Wunderlich1984-03-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Physics Edition

Abstract Polytetrafluoroethylenes of different crystallinity were analyzed between 220 and 700 K by differential scanning calorimetry. A new computer coupling of the standard DSC is described. The measured heat capacity data were combined with all literature data into a recommended set of thermodynamic properties for…

C. Klason、J. Kubát、H.-E. Strömvall1984-03-01International Journal of Polymeric Materials

The paper reports on the processing and properties of composites consisting of thermoplastics and cellulose-based fillers. The plastics used were HDPE, PP, PS, SB, PA 6, and PA 12; the fillers were wood flour (white spruce), cellulose flour (bleached sulphate, pine) and cellulose fibre (bleached sulphate, birch). The…

Post-translational activation introduces a free radical into pyruvate formate-lyase.

J Knappe、F. A. Neugebauer、Hans-Peter Blaschkowski 等 4 位作者1984-03-01Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Pyruvate formate-lyase (formate acetyltransferase; EC 2.3.1.54) of Escherichia coli cells is post-translationally interconverted between inactive and active forms. Conversion of the inactive to the active form is catalyzed by an Fe2+-dependent activating enzyme and requires adenosylmethionine and dihydroflavodoxin. Th…

Hindrance of Grain Growth in Al 2 O 3 by ZrO 2 Inclusions.

F. F. Lange、MARGARET M. HIRLINGER1984-03-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Alumina and Al 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 (1 to 10 vol%) composite powders were mixed and consolidated by a colloidal method, sintered to >98% theoretical density at 1550°C, and subsequently heat‐treated at temperatures up to 1700°C for grain‐size measurements. Within the temperature range studied, the ZrO 2 inclusions exhibited su…

Geometrical models of interface evolution

Richard C. Brower、David A. Kessler、Joel Koplik 等 4 位作者1984-03-01Physical Review A

We introduce a class of models for the motion of a boundary between time-dependent phase domains in which the interface itself satisfies an equation of motion. The intended application is to systems for which competing stabilizing and destabilizing forces act on the phase boundary to produce irregular or patterned str…

Dynamic mechanical studies of α and β relaxations of polyethylenes

R. Popli、M. Glotin、L. Mandelkern 等 4 位作者1984-03-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Physics Edition

Abstract The α and β relaxations of a variety of polyethylenes have been extensively studied using lowfrequency dynamic mechanical methods. The main focus of this work has been both the control and the quantitative measurement of the key structural factors that describe semicrystalline polymer systems. The structural…

Demetrio Gaspar-Tebar、José Luis Sagrera-Moreno1984-03-01Materiales de Construccion

In this present work, a continuation of others, there is studied the variation of pH, as likewise the concentration of the ions Ca (II), Mg (II), SO4 (II) and Cl (I) of artificial sea water (ASTM D 1141-75) in which there have been submerged the series of test specimens of mortar (1: 3) made with an industrial Portlan…

Cementos con cenizas volantes

Mauricio Ossa M.、Hector Jorquera S.1984-03-01Materiales de Construccion

Almost all the studies carried out on cements with the addition of flying ash refer to their characteristics and behaviours in pastes, mortars and concretes, always in relation with Portland cement. This time, there has been developed an experimental work oriented to relate between themselves the cements with addition…

M. Teresa Solesio de la Presa1984-03-01Materiales de Construccion

In this work there is studied, in the frst place a certain manner of constructing which was practiced by the ancient inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula, and which was seen by the Romans on their arrival. This form of constructing consisted in making walls of earth called "formaceos", and which are the basis of a rud…
