The Measurement of the Magnetization Characteristics of Large Power Transformers and Reactors through D.C. Excitation

Stefano Calabrò、F. Coppadoro、Sergio Crepaz1986-10-01IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery

Transformers and reactors used in the electric power transmission systems show non-linear magnetization characteristics, the exact knowledge of which is essential to the study of system transient operation. This paper describes a measurement method for these characteristics, based on D.C. EXCITATION. During such excit…

Thermodynamic and structural aspects of the dehydration of smectites in sedimentary rocks

Peter L. Hall、D. M. Astill、J. D. C. McConnell1986-10-01Clay Minerals

Abstract The diagenetic conversion of smectite to illite in shales has been proposed as a mechanism for generating overpressure (fluid pressure above hydrostatic) in sedimentary basins. However, the mechanism and rate-controlling factors of the reaction and the magnitude of the resulting volume change are not known. I…

Multi-site correlations and the atomic size effect

T. R. Welberry1986-10-01Journal of Applied Crystallography

Optical diffraction patterns are presented which illustrate the effect of multi-site correlations on the diffraction pattern of a model disordered alloy consisting of different sized atoms placed on a simple square lattice. Monte Carlo methods were used to apply size-effect distortions to a number of example lattices…

Development of Aluminum Titanate‐Mullite Composite Having High Thermal Shock Resistance

Hiroyuki Morishima、Zenji Kato、Keizo Uematsu 等 6 位作者1986-10-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Thermomechanical properties of aluminum titanate‐mullite composites were studied for a wide composition range to develop material having high thermal shock resistance. The thermal shock resistance tended to increase with increasing aluminum titanate content. Composite having 82 vol% aluminum titanate can withstand wat…

Reentrant isotropic-nematic transition in lyotropic liquid crystals

Mário J. de Oliveira、A. M. Figueiredo Neto1986-10-01Physical Review A

We consider a model based on the Maier and Saupe theory in order to explain the reentrant nematic-isotropic transition observed in lyotropic liquid crystals. By assuming a linear dependence of the micellar shape anisotropy with temperature, we show that it is possible to obtain a reentrant transition.

Characterization of optically active sites in CaF2:Ce,Mn from optical spectra

S.W.S. McKeever、M. D. Brown、R. Abbundi 等 5 位作者1986-10-01Journal of Applied Physics

In this work we study CaF2:Ce,Mn and use optical absorption, photoluminescence (excitation and emission), and x-ray-induced luminescence to characterize the role played by Ce in various lattice sites during these processes. The data indicate that energy transfer takes place from Ce to Mn, predominantly from Ce3+ in te…

Change in oxide epitaxy on Ni(111): Effects of oxidation temperature

Thomas M. Christensen、C. Raoul、J. M. Blakely1986-10-01Applied Surface Science

Studies of the oxidation of Ni(111) in the temperature range 30–275°C by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and ellipsometry have shown that the epitaxy of the oxide is dependent on the growth temperature. Below 150°C the commonly reported hexagonal p(2×2)-O and NiO(111) patterns…

The Passive Film on Iron: An Investigation by Electron Back‐Scattering Mössbauer Spectroscopy

Michael E. Brett、K. M. Parkin、M. J. Graham1986-10-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

Electron back‐scattering Mössbauer complemented by x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been applied to study the nature of passive films on iron. Data indicate that iron in the films is present as Fe 3+ . While Mössbauer spectra of the films recorded at room and close to liquid helium temperatures more closely…

Novel Modifications of Gold, Rhodium, and Ruthenium—M13 Clusters as Building Blocks of “Superclusters”

Günter Schmid、N. Klein1986-10-01Angewandte Chemie International Edition in English

Not alchemistry but rather chemistry is the basis for preparing a gold modification: [Au 55 (PPh 3 ) 12 Cl 6 ] can be degraded to naked Au 13 clusters in CH 2 Cl 2 solution by application of a 20‐V d.c. potential, the outer layer of the cluster being lost. These smaller clusters reorganize, in turn, the form superclus…

Solitary waves in ferroelectric liquid crystals

Joseph E. Maclennan、Mark A. Handschy、Noel A. Clark1986-10-01Physical Review A

The dynamics of bulk molecular reorientation in ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLC's) are modeled by a continuum of elastically coupled, overdamped, massless ferroelectric dipoles under the influence of an external electric field. Numerical solution of this system's equation of motion in one dimension shows that reori…
