Abstract
Infrared spectra of pyrazole in the vapour and solid states and in solution are reported and discussed. From these, and by comparison with the spectra of N-deuterio-, 3-methyl-, and 3,5-dimethyl-pyrazole, and other simple five-membered heterocycles, a vibrational assignment is proposed.
Abstract When an amorphous polymer is stretched uniaxially, the chain molecules are oriented along the stretching direction. Orientation causes an anisotropy of the macroscopic physical properties with rotational symmetry about the stretching direction. The phenomenological treatment of the properties exhibited by a u…
An experimental study has been made of the hydrolysis of UN in water vapour+argon mixtures of controlled composition. The kinetics of reaction are followed gravimetrically and by estimation of the ammonia liberated. For powdered UN the reaction proceeds rapidly above ∼340°C. Some specimens hydrolyze completely to UO2,…

The effect of aniline and aniline derivatives on the electrochemical characteristics of iron in H 2 SO 4 has been studied using relaxation techniques. Armco iron corrosion was found to be inhibited primarily by an adsorption mechanism. However, evidence was noted which suggested a contribution from a “surface chelate.…
The thermal and X-ray analysis has been made of the decomposition of the trisoxalato-complexes potassium ferric oxalate, sodium ferric oxalate, and ammonium ferric oxalate. The reaction stoicheiometry is described, and the thermal properties of the ammonium complex have been compared with those of ferrous oxalate and…
The application of polymers at ever-increasing temperatures has given impetus to research on the chemistry of thermal decomposition. In recent years polymers have been used for a variety of high-temperature applications, such as cooking vessels, motor insulation, and re-entry vehicle heat shields. Interest in chemistr…

Survival data are presented for a fecal strain of Escherichia coli exposed to three concentrations of chlorine dioxide at four temperatures. Chick's first-order reaction equation is generalized to a pseudo nth-order model. Nonlinear least squares curve-fitting of the survival data to the nth order model was performed…
Abstract Phase separation during the formation of three‐dimensional polymers in the presence of inert diluents, by crosslinking of linear polymers, or by polymerization of multifunctional monomers, was treated under the assumption of thermodynamic equilibrium by using the Flory theory of swelling equilibria and rubber…
The fluorescent response functions of NaI(Tl), CsI(Tl), CsI(Na) and CaF2(Eu) have been determined with thin crystals over the energy range from 3.3 keV to 840 keV. A pronounced nonlinear dependence on photon energy has been observed in this region for all four types of crystals investigated. Qualitatively the response…
Abstract The “traditional” assumed structures of fibers, such as the fringed micelle and fringed fibril forms, regard the fiber as made up of a mixture of crystalline and noncrystalline regions. This view has been subject to considerable criticism in recent years, but it does, nevertheless, remain the most effective b…

Infrared spectra of surface films formed on iron and steel mirrors by propargyl alcohol, acetylene, and ethynyl‐cyclohexanol acid corrosion inhibitors were recorded using a multiple reflectance technique. These spectra showed that the acetylenic molecules reacted at the metal surfaces in solutions to produce protectiv…
Abstract A yield criterion is constructed for glassy polymers from results of constant strain‐rate tests in different stress fields. A significant effect of hydrostatic pressure (or volume change) on the yield stress of polystyrene was found. Direct dilatometric measurements were made on polystyrene, poly(methyl metha…

Abstract Double oriented fiber spectra of syndiotactic polypropylene were obtained. It was possible to redetermine with greater accuracy the unit cell constants, which are: a = 14.50, b = 5.60, c = 7.40 A. Space group: C222 1 . It was proved that the chain has s (2/1)2 symmetry, corresponding to a succession of intern…
The spin-lattice relaxation of paramagnetic ions in ionic crystals takes place via thermal modulations of the complex consisting of the ion and its immediate neighbours. The standard theory is that due to Van Vleck, who used a crystal-field model to describe the complex. In recent years there have been extensive devel…
