Formation of Thick, Large-Area Nanoparticle Superlattices in Lithographically Defined Geometries

Austin J. Akey、Chenguang Lu、Lin Yang 等 4 位作者2010-03-31Nano Letters

Superlattices of colloidal nanocrystals hold the promise of new nanomaterials with tunable properties. The positioning and size of these structures are often poorly controlled after self-assembly from the solution phase, making studies of their properties difficult. We report the fabrication of approximately 100 layer…

Sylvia Schweizer、Thomas Schuster、Mathias Junginger 等 5 位作者2010-03-31Macromolecular Materials and Engineering

Abstract The report shows that simple LbL deposition of positively charged chitosan and negatively charged heparin can be used to efficiently modify the native surface of both NiTi and Ti without any previous treatments. Moreover, mineralization of the polymer multilayers with calcium phosphate leads to surfaces with…

Recovery in Viscid Line Fibers

Gustavo V. Guinea、M.A. Cerdeira、Gustavo R. Plaza 等 5 位作者2010-03-31Biomacromolecules

The development of a reliable procedure for removing the viscous coating of viscid silk has allowed the accurate characterization of the tensile behavior of clean flagelliform silk (i.e., silk of the flagelliform gland without the viscous coating synthetised in the aggregate gland). For comparison, tensile tests on na…

B. Adolphi、Jeffrey McCord、M. Bertram 等 9 位作者2010-03-31Smart Materials and Structures

Galfenol Fe83Ga17 films are sputtered on Si wafers without, and with Ti or Ti/Cu metallic seed layers in order to obtain a magnetoelastic layer which is sensitive to bending deformations of the compound structure. The layer thicknesses range from 100?nm to 5? ?m. Layer morphology, texture, and the Villari effect are e…

Field Ionization of Cold Atoms near the Wall of a Single Carbon Nanotube

Anne Goodsell、Trygve Ristroph、J. A. Golovchenko 等 4 位作者2010-03-31Physical Review Letters

We observe the capture and field ionization of individual atoms near the side wall of a single suspended nanotube. Extremely large cross sections for ionization from an atomic beam are observed at modest voltages due to the nanotube's small radius and extended length. The effects of the field strength on both the atom…

Electrostatic-Assembly-Driven Formation of Micrometer-Scale Supramolecular Sheets of (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane(APTES)-HAuCl 4 and Their Subsequent Transformation into Stable APTES Bilayer-Capped Gold Nanoparticles through a Thermal Process

Xuping Sun、Wentao Wei2010-03-31Langmuir

In this letter, we demonstrate for the first time the electrostatically driven assembly of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) and HAuCl(4) in aqueous media into novel micrometer-scale supramolecular sheets and their subsequent transformation into small, stable APTES bilayer-capped gold nanoparticles through a ther…

Effect of Grain Size Reduction and Geometrical Confinement in Fine Grained Copper: Potential Applications as a Material for Reversible Electrical Contacts

Yannick Champion、Yves Bréchet2010-03-31Advanced Engineering Materials

Abstract The potential of ultrafine grained copper as a material for reversible electrical contact is investigated. The influence of grain size and sample size on strength and electrical properties is discussed. The existence of an optimal grain size and the relevance of size effects for the mechanical properties are…

The Damage Mechanism Route to Better Armor Materials

D. A. Shockey、J. W. Simons、Donald R. Curran2010-03-31International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology

This paper describes the mechanisms by which brittle materials are penetrated by impacting projectiles, links ballistic performance to fracture behavior, and in turn to microstructure, and suggests a route unexplored previously for achieving better armor materials. Fracture patterns on cross sections through partially…

Abstract The main objective of this work is to identify spurious effects and propose a corrective method when coupling a particle model involving long–range interaction potentials with a first gradient homogenized model using the Arlequin framework. The most significant spurious effects are generally created by the so…

Here the correlation between the chemical shift in X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the geometrical structure and the formal valence state of the Mn atom in mixed-valence manganites are discussed. It is shown that this empirical correlation can be reliably used to determine the formal valence of Mn, using either X-ray a…

Abstract meso-Trifluoromethyl-substituted subporphyrin was obtained through an extrusion reaction from meso-trifluoromethyl-substituted heptaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1.1) upon combined metallation of Cu(II) and B(III) ions. The subporphyrin exhibited the most blue-shifted Soret-like absorption band among those ever prepared.
