Abstract The melting behavior of poly(butylene succinate‐ co ‐adipate) (PBSA) isothermally crystallized from the melt was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. Triple, double, or single melting endotherms were observed in subsequent heating scan for the samples isothermally crystallized at different tempe…

Many-spin effects in inelastic neutron scattering and electron paramagnetic resonance of molecular nanomagnets

O. Waldmann、Hans U. Güdel2005-09-20Physical Review B

Many molecular magnetic clusters, such as single-molecule magnets, are characterized by spin ground states with defined total spin $S$ exhibiting zero-field splittings. In this work, the spectroscopic intensities of the transitions within the ground-state multiplet are analyzed. In particular, the effects of a mixing…

MEMS sensor material based on polypyrrole–carbon nanotube nanocomposite: film deposition and characterization

Kwok-Siong Teh、Liwei Lin2005-09-20Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering

Conductive polymer-based nanocomposite has been utilized as a MEMS sensing material via a one-step, selective on-chip deposition process at room temperature. A doped polypyrrole (PPy) variant synthesized by incorporating multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) into electropolymerized PPy has been shown to improve the sen…

Vincent Ball、Marc Michel、Fouzia Boulmedais 等 7 位作者2005-09-20Crystal Growth & Design

The understanding of the role of biological macromolecules in the nucleation of calcium carbonates and calcium phosphates is of primary importance for the development of biomimetic surfaces able to mimic the proteins used by living organisms to produce such composite materials. In this study we show how polyelectrolyt…

Asymmetric End‐Functionalization of Carbon Nanotubes

Marko Burghard2005-09-20Small

Functionalized carbon nanotubes, particularly those with asymmetric modification, would be of vital importance in a variety of applications in electronics, sensors, biological analysis, and beyond (see picture). A recent advance in the end-functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes offers great promise in rea…

Real-time control of a shape memory alloy adaptive tuned vibration absorber

Emiliano Rustighi、M.J. Brennan、B.R. Mace2005-09-20Smart Materials and Structures

The tuned vibration absorber (TVA) is a well established vibration control device. An adaptive TVA (ATVA) is one whose properties can be continuously adapted to maintain optimal tuning. This paper concerns an ATVA with shape memory alloy (SMA) elements: heating or cooling the SMA changes its elastic modulus and hence…

Solvothermal Synthesis of Nanocrystalline Copper Nitride from an Energetically Unstable Copper Azide Precursor

Jonglak Choi、Edward G. Gillan2005-09-20Inorganic Chemistry

Nonaqueous solvothermal chemical reactions have found extensive utility in the growth of inorganic non-oxide materials. This report describes the successful use of organic solvothermal environments to synthesize energetically unstable copper azide precursors that are then decomposed in situ to crystalline metastable c…

X-ray absorption near-edge structure and valence state of Mn in (Ga,Mn)N

A. N. Titov、X. Biquard、D. Halley 等 12 位作者2005-09-20Physical Review B

The band structure of the diluted magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)N, and the x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) at the K edge of Mn, were calculated using the linearized augmented plane wave method. The calculated K-edge spectra fit well with experimental data obtained on samples of ${\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\ensuremat…

Ground-State Electronic and Magnetic Properties of a μ3-Oxo-Bridged Trinuclear Cu(II) Complex: Correlation to the Native Intermediate of the Multicopper Oxidases

Jungjoo Yoon、Edward I. Solomon2005-09-20Inorganic Chemistry

The ground-state electronic and magnetic properties of one of the possible structures of the trinuclear Cu(II) site in the native intermediate (NI) of the multicopper oxidases, the mu(3)-oxo-bridged structure, are evaluated using the C(3)-symmetric Cu(3)(II) complex, mu(3)O. mu(3)O is unique in that no ligand, other t…

Strain-induced nonlinearity of filled rubbers

Xiaorong Wang、Christopher G. Robertson2005-09-20Physical Review E

Dynamic strain-induced nonlinearity in the modulus of filled rubbers shows a striking similarity to what is known about the glass transition of solid materials and the jamming transition of granular materials. This analogy stems from the reality that shear strain in dynamic mechanical measurements introduces fluctuati…

A Polar Oxide with a Large Magnetization Synthesized at Ambient Pressure

Helen Hughes、Mathieu Allix、Craig A. Bridges 等 9 位作者2005-09-20Journal of the American Chemical Society

The perovskite Bi2Mn4/3Ni2/3O6 is polar and combines relative permittivity behavior consistent with ferroelectricity with the magnetic response of a concentrated spin-glass. Bi2Mn4/3Ni2/3O6 is accessible by ambient pressure synthesis despite the instability of the end-members BiMnO3 and BiNiO3 under these conditions.

Resonance energy transfer and quantum dots

Gregory D. Scholes、Davıd L. Andrews2005-09-20Physical Review B

The mechanism of energy transfer between quantum dots is investigated theoretically. In order to incorporate explicit account of the selection rules for absorption of circularly polarized light, a quantum electrodynamical treatment of the electronic coupling is derived. The electronic coupling is mediated by the excha…

Multilocus Binding Increases the Relaxivity of Protein‐Bound MRI Contrast Agents

Zhaoda Zhang、Matthew T. Greenfield、Marga Spiller 等 6 位作者2005-09-20Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Spinning around: The sensitivity of MRI contrast agents can be increased through multilocus binding. This restricts the internal motion and therefore increases the relaxivity of a bound protein multimer (see picture; A) relative to a single binding group (B), whose flexibility and internal motion limits the relaxivity…

Effect of Ag and Au Nanoparticles on the SERS of 4-Aminobenzenethiol Assembled on Powdered Copper

Kwan Kim、Hyun Sook Lee2005-09-20The Journal of Physical Chemistry B

Raman scattering measurements were conducted for 4-aminobenzenethiol (4-ABT) assembled on powdered copper substrates. Initially, very weak Raman peaks were detected, but upon attaching Ag nanoparticles probably via NH2 groups onto 4-ABT/Cu, distinct Raman spectra were observed. Considering the fact that no Raman peak…

Giant Spin-splitting in the Bi/Ag(111) Surface Alloy

Christian R. Ast、Daniela Pacilé、Mihaela Falub 等 10 位作者2005-09-20arXiv

Surface alloying is shown to produce electronic states with a very large spin-splitting. We discuss the long range ordered bismuth/silver(111) surface alloy where an energy bands separation of up to one eV is achieved. Such strong spin-splitting enables angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy to directly observe t…

We investigate how the insertion of an oxygen atom in an atomically thin gold nanowire can affect its rupture. We find, using ab initio total energy density functional theory calculations, that O atoms when inserted in gold nanowires form not only stable but also very strong bonds, in such a way that they can extract…
