Abstract A scanning and high voltage electron microscope study of the fabric of laboratory sedimented moist uncompressed kaolinite and illite floccules reveals an abundance of face-face flake orientation in the porous clay network. Clays were flocculated in the laboratory in both distilled water and slightly saline (1…

The weak beam technique is used to obtain a value for the stacking-fault energy of copper. The observed partial dislocation image spacings are compared with many-beam computational models and it is demonstrated that anisotropic elasticity theory breaks down for small partial dislocation spacings in copper.

One of the modes of electromigration damage is shown to be related to irregularities in the grain-boundary structure of films. Based on the restriction of electromigration to grain boundaries, calculations are performed to determine the magnitude and distribution of excess vacancy concentrations at sites where electro…

A heritable connective tissue disorder of cattle, dermatosparaxis, is characterized by an extreme fragility of the skin and the presence of additional peptides at the N-terminal extremities of the collagen alpha chains, p-alpha(1) and p-alpha(2). The existence of an enzyme activity is demonstrated in normal connective…

Using standard imaging techniques of electron microscopy it is not possible to resolve the partial dislocations having the equilibrium separation for dissociated dislocations in the pure face-centred cubic metals. Consequently the stacking-fault energy γ cannot be determined from direct measurements of the separations…

The hopping conduction process is examined under conditions of high temperatures, high fields and a non-uniform distribution of hopping sites. It is shown that the field dependence of the Mott T −¼ law can yield information about the trap density distribution. A new mechanism of conduction, considering the emission of…

Samples of the cobalt-zinc ferrite series ${\mathrm{Co}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Zn}}_{x}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ have been studied by the M\"ossbauer-effect technique at 4 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K, in magnetic fields from 0 to 80 kOe, covering the full range of zinc content. The cation distri…

The refractive indices of the ternaryA^{I}B^{III}C_{2}^{VI}semiconductors AgGaS2, CuGaS2, and CuInS2have been measured over the entire range of transparency of these crystals. The optical nonlinear coefficients for second-harmonic generation have also been determined. Three-frequency collinear phase matching is analyz…

Photoemission energy distributions at high photon energies permit one-electron measurements of the electronic energy levels and level widths of chemisorbed gases on clean metal surfaces at fractional monolayer coverages. Chemisorbed CO on Ni exhibits energy levels at 7.5 and 10.7 eV below the Fermi level ${E}_{\mathrm…
