15—A STUDY OF FABRIC-ON-FABRIC DYNAMIC FRICTION

D. Wilson1963-04-01Journal of the Textile Institute Transactions

A new apparatus for the investigation of the dynamic friction of fabric is described. The apparatus is designed so that frictional forces may be recorded as a function of the orientation of the fabric relative to a specified direction. Most of the experimental data have been obtained for the friction of a fabric on it…

Characterization of a second helical amylose modification

B. Zaslow1963-04-01Biopolymers

Abstract From x‐ray diffraction data, a pseudohexagonal unit cell with a = b = 14.94 A. and c = 7.93 A. has been obtained for partially dried precipitate of amylose and tertiary butyl alcohol. Geometrical considerations establish a helical amylose configuration which has seven glucose residues per helix turn.

Shock-Tube Study of the Recombination of O Atoms by Ar Catalysts at High Temperatures

Kurt L. Wray1963-04-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

The three-body recombination of O atoms by Ar catalysts was measured over a temperature range of 1340–2920°K in a shock-tube experiment. The excess amount of O atoms was produced by shocking dilute O3–Ar mixtures. Under the experimental conditions, the O atoms in excess of equilibrium produced by the reaction O3+M→O+O…

AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE VERTICAL DISTRIBUTION OF LITTORAL MARINE DIATOMS1

Richard W. Castenholz1963-04-01Limnology and Oceanography

Extensive covers of epilithic diatoms seldom develop on intertidal substrates in southern Oregon in the presence of grazing animals and macroscopic algae. If an area is cleared, however, a brown coating of diatoms often appears in 2 to 3 weeks, but the density depends on the season and the local conditions during tida…

An Analysis of the Hysteresis Motor I - Analysis of the Idealized Machine

M.A. Copeland、G.R. Slemon1963-04-01IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems

This paper presents an analysis of an idealized polyphase hysteresis machine. The distributed magnetic field within the machine is described in terms of dimensions and windings. A single-phase equivalent circuit is developed for the machine and expressions are given for the parameters of this equivalent circuit and fo…

Some Magnetic Properties of Gd Single Crystals

C. D. Graham1963-04-01Journal of Applied Physics

The magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants of Gd have been measured from 10° to 350°K. The behavior near the Curie temperature (about 300°K) is unusual: a fairly large, strongly field-dependent apparent anisotropy persists to temperatures at least 30° above the Curie temperature, and in the range 250° to 285°K this a…

Abstract The potential energy of polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyoxymethylene, polyisobutylene, polyvinylidene chloride, and isotactic polypropylene with a helical conformation has been calculated as a function of the angles of rotation around the bonds of the backbone chain. The use of appropriate function…

Single-Domain Properties in Hexagonal Ferrites

C. Denis Mee、Jürgen Jeschke1963-04-01Journal of Applied Physics

Barium ferrite platelet-shaped particles have been prepared with a diameter of 0.1 microns, which is an order of magnitude smaller than those obtained by conventional sintering and regrinding techniques. The preparation technique used has been optimized to produce the complete ferrite with σs=68 emu/g. Due to the smal…

Dynamical Behavior of Dislocations in the Primary Slip Systems of Body-Centered Cubic Crystals

L. J. Teutonico1963-04-01Journal of Applied Physics

The general analysis of uniformly moving dislocations in anisotropic media is applied to investigate the dynamical behavior of dislocations in the primary slip systems of body-centered cubic crystals. Both edge and screw dislocations on the {110}, {112}, and {123} slip planes are considered; in each case, the Burgers…

Magnetic Properties of a Single Crystal of Manganese Phosphide

E. E. Huber、D. H. Ridgley1963-04-01Journal of Applied Physics

Magnetic measurements on a single crystal of MnP indicate strong ferromagnetic interactions at room temperature and cast doubt on previous ferrimagnetic or canted spin models. A new first-order transformation has been observed at 50°K below which MnP is metamagnetic, i.e., it exhibits a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic…

Rotating-Field Technique for Galvanomagnetic Measurements

F. G. West1963-04-01Journal of Applied Physics

The isothermal galvanomagnetic behavior of an isotropic conductor in a magnetic field can be described by the vector equation E=ρ⊥j+n(j·n) (ρ∥−ρ⊥)+ρH(n×j),relating the electric field E to the current density j. The resistivities ρ∥ and ρ⊥ are those which result when the magnetic induction is parallel to j, and normal…

``Free Volume'' and the Viscosity of Liquid Water

A. A. Miller1963-04-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

The viscosity of liquid water between −10° and +150°C (Psat=4.7 atm) is expressed by the equation: η=A exp[B/ (T−T0)], in which A = 290 μp, B = 510°, and T0 = 150°K. The true temperature-independent activation energy for viscous flow is E = RB = 1020 cal/mole. The ``free volume'' representation uses the equation η=A e…
