The transparency of crystalline polymers

Ruth Pritchard1964-01-01Polymer Engineering and Science

Abstract Much past confusion has originated from attempts to describe the complete optical properties of a plastic in terms of a few ill‐defined parameters. Simple light‐scattering theory and studies of morphology have been combined in this article to suggest the causes of polymer opacity; methods cited for the improv…

3—THE GEOMETRICAL PROPERTIES OF SIMPLE WARP-KNIT FABRICS

P. Grosberg1964-01-01Journal of the Textile Institute Transactions

The geometrical properties of 2-bar full-set fabrics are considered in terms of two models; one in which there is a great deal of friction, so that parts of the structure are isolated from each other, and one in which this friction can be neglected. Il is shown that the model with the frictional restraint appears to p…

Elastic Constants of a (73.8% Ni-26.2% Fe) Ferromagnetic Alloy

Norman G. Einspruch、L.T. Claiborne1964-01-01Journal of Applied Physics

The elastic constants of a (73.8% Ni-26.2% Fe) ferromagnetic alloy have been measured at 300°K with the following results: C11=23.04, C12=14.44, and C44=11.92 (in units of 1011 dyn cm−2). These results are compared with previously reported work on pure Ni and a (30% Ni-70% Fe) alloy.

Plasma Anodized Aluminum Oxide Films

George J. Tibol、Robert W. Hull1964-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

A low‐pressure gas plasma of oxygen ions has been used as the electrolyte for anodizing evaporated aluminum films on glass substrates. The oxide film grows at 22Aå/v at low voltages, while above 50v, the growth rate is somewhat less. Films have been anodized up to 90v. Capacitors formed of such plasma anodized aluminu…

Analysis of the Hydrogen Reduction of Silicon Tetrachloride Process on the Basis of a Quasi-Equilibrium Model

T. O. Sedgwick1964-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

The process for the growth of silicon single crystals by the hydrogen reduction of silicon tetrachloride has been described using a model which assumes that chemical equilibrium obtains at the silicon deposition site. The thermodynamic calculations by Lever for the equilibrium gas phase composition in the Si‐Cl‐H syst…

The Role of Hydrolysis in the Reaction of Heavy Metals with Soil‐Forming Materials

J. F. Hodgson、K. G. Tiller、Martha Fellows1964-01-01Soil Science Society of America Journal

Abstract The proposition that hydrolysis may account for the selective adsorption of heavy metals by clay surfaces is compared with an alternate explanation of specific exchange of the metal with weakly dissociable H + . It is shown that past evidence offered in support of the two hypotheses is somewhat ambiguous. The…

Electrodeposited Composite Coatings

Ralph Vaughan Williams、P. Martin1964-01-01Transactions of the IMF

SummaryExperiments investigating a novel method of preparing composite coatings are described. In this method, the dispersed phase, which may be fibrous or granular, is incorporated into a metallic matrix by suspending the fibres or particles in a plating bath suitable for electroplating the matrix material. Provided…

Surface Activity at Organic Liquid-Air Interfaces

N. L. Jarvis、Robert B. Fox、W. A. Zisman1964-01-01Advances in chemistry series

The present investigation describes the successful modification of the surface properties of polymeric solids by the adsorption of appropriate partially fluorinated compounds at polymer-air interfaces during the formation of the polymer surfaces. The extent of additive adsorption was found to be dependent upon the mol…

Ultrasonic Relaxation near the Curie Temperature of Ferroelectric Triglycine Sulfate

E. J. O'Brien、T. A. Litovitz1964-01-01Journal of Applied Physics

According to a theory developed by Landau and Khalatnikov, the approach of long-range order to equilibrium can be characterized by a relaxation time with a temperature dependence of the form: τ=β/(Tc − T), where β is constant and Tc is a second-order phase transition temperature. The ferroelectric material, triglycine…

The Fate of the Intact Orb Web of the Spider Araneus Diadematus Cl. 1)

Alan L. Breed、Victor D. Levine、David B. Peakall 等 4 位作者1964-01-01Behaviour

When spider webs were left intact in the aluminum-glass boxes in the laboratory, most animals ate old webs daily and built new ones. The new webs were built with a larger amount of thread protein, increasing steadily in weight with increasing length of the non-elimination period, to more than 3 times in 8 days. The in…
