New models are proposed for the two lyotropic liquid crystal phases of the anti-asthmatic drug, disodium cromoglycate (DSCG). It is suggested that the M phase consists of square hollow cylinders of DSCG packed in a hexagonal array in a water continuum. Each hollow cylinder consists of a stack of rings of four DSCG mol…

The marine diatom Amphora coffeaeformis required Ca(2+) and bicarbonate for motility. Movement was inhibited by the Ca(2+)-blocking agents ruthenium red and alpha-isopropyl-alpha-[(N-methyl-N-homoveratryl)-alpha- aminopropyl]-3,4,5-trimethoxy phenyl acetonitrile and the metabolic energy uncoupler, carbonyl cyanide 3-c…

Literature dealing with general properties of soil K and with K relationships in Atlantic Coastal Plain Soils was discussed. Potassium, among major and secondary nutrient elements, is the most abundant in soils. It, among mineral cations required by plants, is largest in non‐hydrated size. Potassium has a polarizabili…

The vibronic structure in the single crystal polarized luminescence spectra of K₂[Pt(CI₄], K₂[PtBr₄], and K₂[Co(CN)₆]•3H₂O is analyzed by Franck-Condon calculations. The various degrees of approximation in the Franck-Condon calculations are described. The differentes in the calculated vibronic intensities and in the c…

Electron-paramagnetic-resonance experiments in LiTb${\mathrm{F}}_{4}$, LiHo${\mathrm{F}}_{4}$, and LiEr${\mathrm{F}}_{4}$ have been performed at frequencies between 70 and 600 GHz, in magnetic fields up to 60 kG and in the temperature range $1.4<T<25$ K. The experiments yield precise information on the lowest le…

Abstract To investigate the interaction of rhenium with several supports, a preliminary study on pure rhenium compounds has been carried out in order to achieve a better understanding of their surface chemical properties. To this end X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetry (TG) methods have been ap…

Defects and textures were studied in the discotic mesophases formed by an hexa-alkoxy-triphenylene (the pentyl derivative). Two main textures are distinguished, with molecular stacks lying mainly vertical or horizontal. The vertical texture is more frequent between slide and coverslip; the second one is favoured by th…

Electron microscope studies have been made of the propagation of shear cracks and the distribution of dislocations in the plastic zone during in situ tensile deformation of stainless steel single crystals. In thin-foil specimens under plane stress conditions, the plastic zone was coplanar with the crack and it represe…

We present a review of the physical properties of ferroelectric liquid crystals in the chiral smectic C* phase. We describe the measurements of spontaneous polarization and related quantities. We discuss the effects of small and large electric fields on homogeneous textures.

The hydrogen embrittlement of an AISI 304 steel containing different amounts of α′ martensite has been studied by charging the specimens with hydrogen through cathodic polarization and subsequent tensile testing. Increasing α′ martensite content was found to have a great effect on the fracture surface morphology and t…

During the period 1950–1979 the author has, in co-operation with various co-workers, investigated some of the corrosion phenomena occurring in the application of copper materials. A survey is given of some conclusions reached in investigations on the following subjects: the electrode kinetics of copper in acidic coppe…

Abstract The formation of volatile pyrolyzates in poly(vinyl chloride) has been studied by pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy. Isotopic distributions of pyrolyzates from experiments with perdeutero‐PVC show that pure conjugated aromatic pyrolyzates (e.g., benzene, styrene, naphalene, biphenyl, anthracene)…

Infrared spectra of the water formaldehyde complex in argon and nitrogen matrices have been obtained. The complex shifts of the water fundamentals clearly show that water forms a hydrogen bond with formaldehyde. HDO prefers to form a D bond, but a metastable H-bonded complex is observed in nitrogen matrices below 20 K.
