Dendrites, Viscous Fingers, and the Theory of Pattern Formation

J. S. Langer1989-03-03Science

There has emerged recently a new theoretical picture of the way in which patterns are formed in dendritic crystal growth and in the closely analogous phenomenon of viscous fingering in fluids. Some interesting questions that arise in connection with this theory include: How broad is its range of validity? How do we un…

The thermal decomposition of basic lead styphnate RD 1349 at its ignition temperature

Daniel J. Whelan、Branka Pletikapa、Mark Fitzgerald1989-03-01Journal of Energetic Materials

Basic lead styphnate RD 1349 forms the primary explosive component of several high temperature fuzehead formulations and percussion primers. A study of its thermal decomposition under controlled conditions near its ignition temperature (521–525 K) shows that it decomposes very rapidly, following a second order autocat…

Reaction of 1,3,5-tris(dimethylamino)benzene (TDMAB ) with 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexacyanobenzene (HCNB) in acetonitrile solution gives - depending on the crystallization method - two different products: dark needles of a 1:1 (1) and black compact crystals with a metallic lustre of a 2:1 (2) charge transfer complex. 2 crystalli…

Synthesis and characterization of poly(amide‐sulfonamide)s

Jerry M. Adduci、Michael J. Amone1989-03-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A Polymer Chemistry

Abstract Novel poly(amide‐sulfonamide)s have been prepared by reacting terephthaloyl, isophthaloyl, and sebacoyl chloride with variously substituted dianilines containing preformed sulfonamide linkages. Inherent viscosities of the prepared polymers ranged from 0.19 to 0.58 dL/g. Despite low apparent viscosities, the p…

Photooxidation of 2-Phenylbenzotriazoles

R. G. Amiet、N. A. Evans、PM Wynne1989-03-01Australian Journal of Chemistry

Irradiation, with ultraviolet light, of 2-phenylbenzotriazole in aerated solvents resulted in oxidation of the benzo ring to yield the diacid 2-phenyl-1,2,3-triazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid. A possible intermediate, 2-phenylbenzotriazole-4,7-dione, also yielded the diacid on photooxidation . The methyl ether of the comm…

Building factors of transformer cores made from low loss Si-steel sheets

S. Wada、Takeshi Yagisawa、Nanami ASAI1989-03-01Physica Scripta

Grain-oriented silicon steels of various thickness were built into 3-phase stacked cores, and the relationship between the building factor (B.F.) and the material loss was discussed. The loss component proportional to square of frequency ( W e ), and the ratio of W e to total loss too, decrease as the thickness of the…

Modulated Phases in the Ba2SiO4-Ca2SiO4System of A2BX4, K2SO4-related Structures

Ray L. Withers、J. G. Thompson、B. G. Hyde1989-03-01Crystallography Reviews

The A2BX4 family of K2SO4-related structures have long been of interest to crystal chemists, largely due to the numerous different polymorphs and complicated sequences of phase transitions they sometimes exhibit as a function of temperature. For most such A2BX4 compounds, there are essentially only two distinct struct…

Damping Properties of Various Materials

Michael L. Drake1989-03-01Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC)

Complex modulus data is presented for a total of 44 materials. The material types include polymers, enamels, and structural adhesives. The complex modulus data was obtained using the ASTM E-756 standard test. The complex modulus data set for each material given in this report contains the following information: A full…

Particle Dispersion in Relation to Clothing

W. Whyte、P. V. Bailey1989-03-01Journal of the IEST

People are major contributors of particle contamination in cleanrooms and therefore must wear occlusive clothing to reduce their dispersion. Three tests are described which assess the effectiveness of fabrics in filtering body emissions. Also described is a dispersal chamber in which the dispersal rate of a person can…

Unit-Cell Dimensions of Two-Dimensionai Clay Minerals

Peter Bayliss1989-03-01Powder Diffraction

Abstract The unit cell dimensions of minerals in the smectite group, regular and random mixed-layer groups, and halloysite shown in the Mineral Powder Diffraction File (1986) have been refined by least-squares analysis in the hexagonal system with a primitive lattice with indices restricted to hk or 00 l reflections.…

High-Field Dielectric Dissipation Property in Low-Density Polyethylene Film

T. Tokoro、Masayuki Nagao、Masamitsu Kosaki1989-03-01Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

The high-field dielectric dissipation factor (tan δ) of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films was studied as a function of the applied ac field and the voltage application period. The measurements were made at room temperature by means of a current comparator-type capacitance bridge. As the applied ac field increased,…

Extractable aluminium, iron and manganese in mineral soils: I Dependence of extractability on the pH of oxalate, pyrophosphate and EDTA extractants

R. Niskanen1989-03-01Agricultural and Food Science

Al, Fe and Mn in two mineral soils were extracted by 0.05 M and 0.02 M oxalate and pyrophosphate and 0.02 M EDTA solutions the pH of which was adjusted to values ranging from 1.7 to 11.0. The extractability of metals tended to decrease as the pH rose and as the deprotonation of extractant acid, expressed as pKa values…
