The high temperature modification of sodium ferrite, β-NaFeO 2 , has weak ferromagnetism, whose Curie temperature is about 450°C. The magnetic property resembles that of LaFeO 3 . The origin of weak ferromagnetism of β-NaFeO 2 can be attributed to the presence of the Dzyalo-shinsky type interaction in this compound.

The Ru–B and Os–B systems were investigated by x-ray powder diffraction. In addition to Aronsson's hexagonal Ru7B3 phase, two new hexagonal Ru–B phases were found: RuB2(D6h1—P6/mmm, a0=2.852 A, c0=2.855 A) and Ru2B5(D6h4—P6/mmc, a0=2.89 A, c0=12.81 A. In the Os–B system, two new hexagonal phases, isomorphous with the…

This paper describes an instrument for recording the coefficient of static friction between samples of cloth by reciprocating one sample and recording the resultant motion of the other when restrained by springs. Some test results are given for cloths of different structure and those made from yarns spun on normal and…

Fused aluminum oxide containing a small amount of nitrogen (as added aluminum nitride) showed X‐ray powder diffraction patterns similar to the δ‐alumina obtained from the calcination of alumina mouohydrate in dry air. About 1% nitrogen was adequate for complete conversion of the α phase to the δ phase. A fused mixture…

The distribution of the magnetization is calculated for a thick ferromagnetic slab with easy axis transverse to the plane of the slab in a large applied field in the plane of the slab. The calculation predicts a stable nonuniform distribution which has several features suggestive of the domain pattern to be expected i…

The rate of dissociation of oxygen in Xe–O2 mixtures was measured over a temperature range of 3000°K to 6000°K. An x-ray densitometer was used to measure the density during the dissociation process behind a shock wave. It was possible to match the experimental data with theoretical density profiles over a wide range o…

A brief outline is given of the history of wash primers with emphasis on laboratory research. A mechanism is postulated to explain the loss of adhesion with time of WP-1. Topics discussed include phase rule studies of zinc tetraoxychromate, intrinsic viscosities of recovered polymers, reactions involving formation of…

A method is presented for preparing a reproducible silica glass or quartz surface that does not craze during rate of solution measurements in solutions of the five group I hydroxides. For silica glass, initial rates are a maximum at 8 M for at least NaOH and KOH and are an inverse function of ion size for the five cat…

The second is a more rigorous theory in which the boundary conditions at the surface of the sample are taken into account. The refined theory admits instabilit…

“Surface‐enrichment” is a term which is now commonly used to describe the composition changes which have taken place during the life of a buried noble metal alloy. In fact “surface depletion” might be a better term, since it seems likely that it is the leaching out of the less chemically stable elements which causes t…

The magnetic properties of Mn 3.67 Sn, Mn 1.77 Sn, and MnSn 2 were investigated. In Mn 3.67 Sn, an anomalous magnetic phenomenon was found, which may be due to its antiferromagnetism. The origin of the ferrimagnetisni of Fe 7 Se 8 ( T c =187°C) may be attributed to this ordered arrangement similarly to the case of Fe 7 Se 8 . There are two types of the su…
