We report nanotags encapsulated in Au-Ag nanostructure that are active in surface-enhanced Raman scattering. The Au-Ag nanoshells are filled with Ag via citrate reduction, entrapping label molecules in the process. The nanotags can be used for quantitative SERS measurements with the label molecules as internal referen…

A new class of fluorescent organogelators, pyrene-containing poly(arylene ether sulfone)s, showed two fluorescence switching modes in different gelation solvents. The THF gel exhibited excimer emission due to dimerization of the pyrene groups. In contrast, excimer emission was quenched after gelation in MC because of…

We report photoluminescence (PL) modulation of quantum dots (QDs) by photoinduced electron transfers from acridine-1,8-dione derivative surface ligands. Reversible PL switching upon many repeated cycles was demonstrated, as alternating on and off of the UV excitation for the surface ligand has successfully resulted in…

The reaction of Mn(HCOO)(2)·2H(2)O, (t)BuSaoH(2) (3,5-di-tert-butyl-salicylaldoxime) and sodium azide in isopropanol leads to [NaMn(3)((t)BuSao)(6)] (1). Its structure can be described as a linear trinuclear cluster bridged by oximato ligands. Magnetic investigation revealed that the ferromagnetic coupling interaction…

Anode supported solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) with varying Ni content in the anode function layer (AFL) were fabricated and investigated. The observed open circuit potential (OCP) was higher with lower Ni content. However, the highest maximum power densities (MPDs) in the low temperature range, from 450 to 650°C, wer…

We show that low energy tunneling electrons can excite propagating surface plasmons in gold nanowires. The separation of excitation and outcoupling proves that the tunneling electrons excite gap plasmons that subsequently couple to propagating plasmons.

Immobilization of functional proteins such as enzymes on solid surfaces produces a variety of effects ranging from the reversal and strong inhibition to the enhancement of protein stability and function. Such effects are protein-dependent and are affected by the physical and chemical properties of the surfaces. Functi…

Polyaniline (PANI) is doped with poly(acrylic acid-co-maleic acid) (PAMA) containing HCl to obtain PANI-PAMA film. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy results confirm the doping of PANI with PAMA and HCl. A scanning electron microscopy image reveals that the film is composed of highly porous nanowires. Platinum (Pt) part…

Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr (TNTZ) is a very attractive material for biomedical applications because of its low Young's modulus. However, this alloy contains a certain amount of rare-metals elements. In this study, Ti-Fe-Nb-Zr system alloys were developed by substituting Fe for Ta as the low cost β stabilizer, and the mechanic…
