The Melt Refining of Irradiated Uranium: Application to EBR-II Fast Reactor Fuel. XII. The Behavior of Ruthenium, Molybdenum, Palladium, Rhodium, Technetium, Antimony, Cadmium, and Tellurium

N. R. Chellew、GaryF. Bennett1961-01-01Nuclear Science and Engineering

Ruthenium, molybdenum, palladium, rhodium, technetium, and antimony are retained by the bulk metal when uranium containing macrolevels of accompanying fission elements is melt-refined in oxide crucibles at 1200–1400°C. Under similar conditions, cadmium and tellurium are nearly quantitatively removed, the latter elemen…

THE CRYSTAL STRUCTURE OF ANTLERITE

Takaharu Araki1961-01-01Mineralogical Journal

The crystal structure of antlerite has been worked out by means of the heavy atom method through the two-dimensional Patterson and Fourier syntheses. The lattice constants of the mineral are a0=8.23±0.02Å., b0=12.00±0.02Å. and c0=6.03±0.01Å. Its space group is Pnam, and there are four chemical units of composition Cu3…

High Energy:Weight Ratio, Nickel Cadmium Cells

Joseph C. Duddy、Alvin J. Salkind1961-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

Conventional nickel cadmium cells contain the active materials in either porous sintered nickel plaques or in nickel or nickel‐plated steel pockets or tubes. A new process, adaptable to continuous methods of production, has been developed in which the active and conductive materials are dispersed in a microporous plas…

Gyromagnetic Ratios of Manganese Alloys

G. G. Scott1961-01-01Physical Review

The gyromagnetic ratios of two different ferromagnetic alloys of manganese were measured by Einstein-deHaas experiments. The Heusler alloy ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}$MnAl gave a ${g}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ value of 1.993\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.002. The alloy MnSb gave a ${g}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ value of 1.978\ifmmode\pm\else\t…

Mineral deposits of Luna County, New Mexico

George B. Griswold1961-01-01OpenAlex

Luna County mines have produced $8.64 million in minerals since the first recorded mining operations in 1876. The bulk of this production has been from lead-zinc-silver ores, but appreciable amounts of manganese, fluorspar, copper, and gold also have been mined. The principal producing districts of the past were the C…

Incremental modification of styrene–butadiene rubber with tert-dodecyl mercaptan

Colin Booth、L. R. Beason、J. T. Bailey1961-01-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

The molecular weights and molecular weight distribution of a styrene–butadiene rubber produced at 5°C. according to an incrementally modified recipe with tert-dodecyl mercaptan modifier, do not differ significantly from those of similar conventionally modified rubbers. The limiting effect of diffusion upon the mass tr…

The influence of ageing on the characteristics of oil-filled cable dielectric

P. Gazzana-Priaroggia、G. Palandri、U.A. Pelagatti1961-01-01Proceedings of the IEE Part A Power Engineering

An investigation has been made of the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the insulation of samples of cables in the range of 60-230 kV after many years of operation in order to evaluate the influence of ageing on the dielectric of oil-filled cables. To determine the effect of thermal ageing alone and in comb…

NEW SOLVENT-TYPE VARNISHES

Robert L. Feller1961-01-01Studies in Conservation

C 30 QJ u without cracking (reference 1, p. 135). It is known that, up to a certain point, increasing the average molecular weight of a polymer will increase the strength of the filnls and give them greater ability to elongate. Therefore, the characterization of polymers through some measurement that indicates the ave…

Blending Cottons Differing in Fiber Bundle Break Elongation

Gain L. Louis、Louis A. Fiori、Jack E. Sands1961-01-01Textile Research Journal

Two long staple cottons, differing in fiber bundle break elongation but having other pertinent fiber properties substantially equal, were blended in different percentages to permit a study of the effects of break-elongation on yarn properties and spinning etbciency. Yarn strength and elongation were affected by fiber…

Studies on the Polymorphism of L-Glutamic Acid

Yoshiki Sakata1961-01-01Agricultural and Biological Chemistry

The solubilities of L-glutamic acid crystals in α-form and β-form in water were determined, and the results were formulated as follows.α-form: Log S=-0.377+0.0174t (t is from 0° to 30°C)Log S=-0.328+0.0153t (t is from 30° to 70°C)β-form: Log S=-0.461+0.0159tThe formula obtained for β-crystals showed a fair agreement w…

Niobium Solid Electrolytic Capacitors

N. Schwartz、M. Gresh、S. Karlik1961-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

The suitability of niobium as the anode for solid electrolytic capacitors has been investigated. Field crystallization of the amorphous niobium oxide film has been found to be a determining factor for the properties of these capacitors. Purity of the porous anodes as dependent on the sintering conditions, formation te…

The Kinetics of Oxidation and Nitridation of Lithium, Calcium, Strontium, and Barium

M. S. Chandrasekharaiah、John L. Margrave1961-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

Reaction rates for lithium, calcium, strontium, and barium during 50–120 min of exposure to O 2 or N 2 were measured as a function of temperature and pressure by a manometric method. Many of the reaction rates were found to be exponential functions of time, but in some cases a linear rate law was found.

Thermodynamic Properties of Molten Mixtures of Cerium Chloride and Calcium Chloride

S. Senderoff、G. W. Mellors、R. I. Bretz1961-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

The thermodynamic properties of solutions of in were determined by emf measurements over the concentration range unity to 10 −3 mole fraction and the temperature range 800° to 925°C. The solutions behaved nearly ideally under all conditions with small deviations, if any, in the positive direction. The solvent effect o…

A Mechanism of the Anodic Passivation of Nickel in Acid Solution –Higher Valence Oxide Film Theory–

Norio Sato、Go Okamoto1961-01-01Transactions of the Japan Institute of Metals

On the anodic passivation of metals, two different processes, (A) precipitation from a super-saturated solution and (B) direct reaction between a metal and solution, have been previously considered for the anodic formation of passive oxide film. Both of these mechanisms were criticized from the kinetic point of view t…
