Surface enhancement of coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering by colloidal spheres

H. Chew、D. S. Wang、Milton Kerker1984-03-01Journal of the Optical Society of America B

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering signals may be strongly enhanced when the active molecules are located near the surface of a small silver particle. The theoretical analysis is similar to the electrodynamic mechanism for surface-enhanced Raman scattering, except that there are four instead of two electric fields…

Synthesis, Sintering, and Microstructure of Nasicons

A.K. Kuriakose、T.A. Wheat、Aftab Ahmad 等 4 位作者1984-03-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The preparation and characterization of Hong and von Alpen types of Nasicons are described. When highly reactive gel‐processed powders are heated at about 1000°C, Nasicons are formed in a finely divided state. Sintering of compacts requires 1125° to 1325°C, depending on the composition. Observed sintering kinetics sug…

Theory of nonlocal piezoelectricity

A. Cemal Eringen1984-03-01Journal of Mathematical Physics

Constitutive equations are derived for nonlinear and linear, nonlocal piezoelectric elastic solids. Restrictions arising from the second law of thermodynamics are determined. The theory of nonlocal em elastic solids is introduced and applied to the discussion of Debye screening of an electron in an elastic solid with…

Purification and properties of NAD-dependent 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase from Acetobacterium woodii.

S.W. Ragsdale、L G Ljungdahl1984-03-01Journal of Biological Chemistry

An NAD-dependent 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase has been purified to homogeneity from autotrophically and heterotrophically grown cells of Acetobacterium woodii. The enzymes from the differently grown cells were indistinguishable by gel filtration and sodium dodecyl sulfate electrophoresis and have a fin…

Stability and solubility relationships between some solids in the system PbO–CO2–H2O

Peter G. Taylor、Vincent J. Lopata1984-03-01Canadian Journal of Chemistry

We have determined equilibrium conditions for each reaction in the solid interconversion sequence [Formula: see text], in aqueous carbonate solutions near 25 °C. Our data yield the following Gibbs energies of formation from the elements, Δ f G ° (298.15 K): plumbonacrite, −5310 ± 31 kJ mol −1 ; hydrocerussite, −1705 ±…

Fabrication of 80 Å metal wires

Wyn Williams、N. Giordano1984-03-01Review of Scientific Instruments

Some years ago Possin reported the fabrication of wires as small as 400 Å in diameter with a method involving electroplating into etched particle tracks in mica. We have refined this technique, and can now use it to routinely produce wires as small as 80 Å. These refinements are described, and the possibility of makin…

Compaction Behavior of Spray‐Dried Alumina

R. Frey、John W. Halloran1984-03-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Compaction behavior and resultant porosity of spray‐dried alumina were examined over a range of pressures from 18 to 345 MPa. The variability in pressed density and pore size was measured as a function of spray‐dried granule size, binder concentration, and powder moisture content. An exponential behavior was found bet…

Self‐diffusion in polymer‐solvent‐solvent systems

J. S. Vrentas、J. L. Duda、Hongtao Ling1984-03-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Physics Edition

Abstract The ternary self‐diffusion data of Ferguson and von Meerwall are analyzed using a generalized form of the free‐volume theory of diffusion proposed by Vrentas and Duda. It is shown that the predicative capabilities of this form of the theory are satisfactory and comparable to those of the Fujita version. The l…

A Review of Thermoluminescence of Calcium Fluoride, Calcium Sulphate and Calcium Carbonate

C.M. Sunta1984-03-01Radiation Protection Dosimetry

CaF2, CaSO4 and CaCO3 are available in mineral form as fluorite, anhydrite (or gypsum) and calcite (or aragonite) respectively. Fluorite and calcite emit intense thermoluminescence (TL). All three materials can be prepared in the laboratory as highly sensitive TL phosphors by crystal growth or sintering techniques. TL…

VALVE MORPHOGENESIS IN THE PENNATE DIATOM NAVICULA CUSPIDATA1

Lesley A. Edgar、J. D. Pickett‐Heaps1984-03-01Journal of Phycology

ABSTRACT The deposition of siliceous valves during asexual reproduction of the pennate diatom, Navicula cuspidata Kütz., is described with emphasis on the cytoplasmic components involved. The events accompanying valve secretion are similar to those already known from other pennate species. After mitosis, the microtubu…

Constitutive Equation for Nematic Liquid Crystals under Weak Velocity Gradient Derived from a Molecular Kinetic Equation. II. –Leslie Coefficients for Rodlike Polymers–

Nobu Kuzuu、Masao Doi1984-03-01Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

The Leslie coefficients of the nematic phase of concentrated solutions of rodlike polymers are calculated based on the molecular theory given in the previous paper (Kuzuu and Doi: J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 52 (1983)). The Leslie coefficients are obtained in the form of an asymptotic expansion with respect to the concentratio…

Viscosities, Glass Transition Temperatures, and Microhardness of Y‐Si‐A1‐O‐N Glasses

Stuart Hampshire、R. A. L. Drew、K. H. Jack1984-03-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Y‐Si‐A1‐O‐N glasses containing up to 15 at.% nitrogen were prepared. Comparisons of properties of glasses with the same cation composition but with varying N:O ratios show that glass transition temperature, viscosity, and microhardness all increase with increasing nitrogen content.

A new class of complex water-soluble polyelectrolytes

V.A. Kabanov、А. Б. Зезин1984-03-01Die Makromolekulare Chemie

Water-soluble nonstoichiometric polyelectrolyte complexes (N-PEC) constitute a new class of polyelectrolytes. N-PEC are formed as a result of interaction between oppositely charged polyelectrolytes taken in non-equivalent rations and thus they are macromolecular compounds. An N-PEC particle can be represented as a mac…

J Knappe、F. A. Neugebauer、Hans-Peter Blaschkowski 等 4 位作者1984-03-01Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Pyruvate formate-lyase (formate acetyltransferase; EC 2.3.1.54) of Escherichia coli cells is post-translationally interconverted between inactive and active forms. Conversion of the inactive to the active form is catalyzed by an Fe2+-dependent activating enzyme and requires adenosylmethionine and dihydroflavodoxin. Th…
