RIBONUCLEIC ACIDS FROM YEAST WHICH CONTAIN A FIFTH NUCLEOTIDE
All recent methods for the isolation of the ribonucleic acids from yeast yield only 20 to 70 per cent of the ribonucleic acids that can be assumed to be present on the basis of quantitative analyses. There have been no studies regarding the nature of the ribonucleic acids that are lost during isolation, but it has tac…
Dislocations and stacking faults in stainless steel
Abstract Further experiments by transmission electron microscopy on thin sections of stainless steel deformed by small amounts have enabled extended dislocations to be observed directly. The arrangement and motion of whole and partial dislocations have been followed in detail. Many of the dislocations are found to hav…
Electrical Properties of Boron Single Crystals
The electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and thermoelectric power of microscopic boron single crystals have been measured as a function of temperature. Rectification and photoconductivity effects were observed at room temperature. The large majority of these single crystals had a high resistivity (about 1.7\ifmmo…
Irradiation Effects in Borosilicate Glass
Irradiation of thick samples of borosilicate glass with high-energy electrons introduces space charges into the dielectric, the decay of which is extremely slow at room temperature. The charged dielectric shows a behavior similar to that of an electret; charges are induced on adjacent conductors and short-circuit disc…
Zur Kenntnis Der Azulene I. Eine Neue Azulen‐Synthese

Calculation of Heat Sterilization Times for Fermentation Media
Sterilization of nutrient media is an operation essential to all industrial fermentation processes re- quiring pure culture maintenance.AMethods for steri- lizing nutrient media include 1) heating, 2) filtration, 3) irradiations, 4) sonic vibration, and 5) exposure to chemical agents.Because heating the medium, usuall…

The thermal and magnetic properties of ytterbium ethyl sulphate between 20°k and 1°k
The susceptibility of a single crystal of ytterbium ethyl sulphate has been measured between 20°k and 1°k, Below 4°k the results obeyed the relations Xπ = 1.08/T per mol, and X⊊ =0.0615 per mol. These measurements served to identify the ground doublet state of the ytterbium ion in this case as |J= 7/2 , J5= ± 8/2 >. T…
Crystal Chemistry of Hydrous Calcium Silicates: II, Characterization of Interlayer Water
Examination of tobermorite, 4–SCaO.5SiO 2 .‐5H 2 O, and xonotlite, 5CaO.5SiO 2 .H 2 O, by infrared absorption revealed striking structural similarities and differences in the two phases. In the 8‐ to 15‐ μ region, the absorption was the same for both; the differences arose from the manner in which water and hydroxyl i…
Mastication of rubber. VI. Viscosity and molecular weight relationships for natural rubber after cold mastication
Abstract Values of limiting viscosity number, Huggins' interaction constant, k ′, osmotic molecular weight and Flory‐Huggins' constant, μ, of masticated and unmasticated rubber have been compared. A calibration of limiting viscosity against molecular weight has been obtained formasticated rubber, but one is not availa…
Thermodynamics of the V–O System : Dissociation Energies of VO and VO2
The molecules vaporizing from V2O5(s) and VO(s) have been determined employing a mass spectrometer to analyze the vapors effusing from Knudsen cells containing these materials. The vapor over the V2O5 loaded cells was found to contain V4O10(g), V6O14(g), V6O12(g) with some evidence for V4O8(g) and V2O4(g). Since both…
Tensile Strength of Plastics below the Glass Temperature
The times taken for two plastics, polystyrene and polyethyl methacrylate, to break under various constant loads are reported for both the glassy and rubbery states. A theory is presented which describes the strength properties of plastics in the glassy state. The theory predicts that the logarithm of the time taken fo…
