Glyoxalase I, a Zn'+-metalloenzyme, induces the slow exchange of the lactoyl Cz proton of the reaction product S-(D-lactoyl)glutathione with the deuterium of 2Hz0, indicating a partial reversal of the enzymatic reaction and confirming a proton transfer mechanism for the isomerization.Paramagnetic effects of the Mn2+su…

Abstract Scanning electron microscopy studies have been carried out on gum and filled natural rubber vulcanizates to investigate the ridge formation in the abrasion of elastomers. The first step of the ridge formation is the occurrence of small particles on the smooth abrading surface by a process of microtearing. The…

Abstract The kinetics of the thermal regeneration of activated carbons used in the waste water treatment was analyzed on the basis of a model that the regeneration reaction consists of a set of many first‐order reactions each of which has different activation energy and frequency factor. The frequency factors were cor…

Experimental data on the longitudinal magnetostriction of two pure and one $p$-type bismuth single crystals are reported for fields up to 19 T at temperatures near 2 K. These data are consistent with a model based on the deformation potential concept used to compute the magnetostrictive strain components versus field,…

In the past, two factors have impeded the quantitative estimate of Fe-oxides in soils by X-ray diffraction. First, Fe-oxides are still quite often considered X-ray amorphous, although numerous results, e.g. a low ratio of oxalate- to dithionite-soluble Fe, have indicated the opposite. Second, even if crystalline, the…

We report the results of calculations of the average polarizability α and second hyperpolarizability γ for benzene, naphthalene, and three different configurations of biphenyl, phenanthrene, anthracene, and pyrene. The computations were performed employing a scheme whose main elements are McWeeny’s coupled Hartree–Foc…

The metabolism of di-n-butylphthalate by a denitrifying strain of Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes B20b1 was studied under anaerobic conditions, with nitrate as the only electron acceptor. Thin-layer chromatography and mass spectral analysis of culture extracts (20 days at 30 degrees C) showed mono-n-butylphthalate and p…

In a tokamak reactor that operates in a cyclic mode, thermal stresses will result in fatigue in structural components, especially in the first wall and blanket. There has been limited work on fatigue in irradiated alloys, but none on irradiated materials containing irradiation-induced helium, which will be characteris…

The self-diffusion of oxygen in NiO has been measured under 150 Torr of oxygen between 1100 and 1600°C. Diffusion profiles were determined with secondary-ion mass spectrometry. The values of the self-diffusion coefficients between 1200 and 1600°C are given by D (cm2 s−1)= 50 exp (-5·6 eV/kT).
