Abstract A polybenzimidazole has been prepared from 3,3′‐diaminobenzidine and phthalic anhydride which has a high molecular weight and very good heat stability. Replacement of the hydrogen atoms on the nitrogen of the imidazole nuclei in a polybenzimidazole does not improve the heat stability as indicated by the prope…

Abstract Wakelin's method of correlation analysis of x‐ray diffraction patterns was adapted for fibers, films, and polymer samples of poly(ethylene terephthalate). This method gives a number called a crystallinity index, which is a measure of how far an unknown sample is between the extremes of the most amorphous and…

Abstract Sheets of isotactic polypropylene were prepared to have initially random orientation and were subsequently rolled at temperatures below the crystalline melting point. Their crystal orientation was investigated. The orientation of the c axis (fiber axis) was determined from pole figure data obtained by x‐ray d…

The effects of additions of La 2 O 3 and La 2 O 3 ‐3TiO 2 on the electronic properties of barium titanate have been investigated. It has been found that small additions of these components markedly increase the lifetime of this material subjected to dc fields of 50 v per mil at 200°C.

Dielectric measurements, analyzed in terms of the Maxwell‐Wagner‐Sillars theories of inhomogeneous dielectrics, have been used to investigate the phase‐separation characteristics of various lithium silicate glasses. Such measurements are shown to provide evidence of the continuous or discontinuous nature of separated…

Measurements of the magnetoelectric effect on ${\mathrm{Cr}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ powders, after magnetoelectric annealing are described. The experimental results are compared with theoretically derived relations between the magnetoelectric effect in single crystals and powders. Reasonable agreement is found.

The crystal structure of sillimanite, Al2SiO5, has been refined as part of a detailed structural study of the aluminum-silicate minerals. Three-dimensional least-squares refinement reduced the disagreement factor, R, for 347 hkl reflections to 5.6%.

The vacuum-ultraviolet reflectance of freshly evaporated aluminum films has been measured as a function of time in vacuum after the deposition. The pressure in the experimental chamber during the measurements ranged from 4 × 10−6 mm Hg at the time of the deposition to an ultimate pressure of 2 × 10−7 mm Hg. The first…

Abstract The release of K from K‐Ca‐illites by repeated extraction with 0.5 N solutions of various salts was determined. From comparison between the action of NH 4 ions and Na ions it could be deduced that the rapidly exchangeable K occupies two types of sites, which were named “planar” sites and “edge‐interlattice” s…
