The hypothesis discussed that the cavitation nuclei consist in gas bubbles. Due to surface tension, small bubbles would dissolve in a very short time. If the bubbles are larger than 5×10−3 cm, or if the liquid is supersaturated, they may last longer or even be stable, but then no cavitation threshold exists. The hypot…

In the past the possibility of thermoelectric refrigeration has been considered, but all attempts to produce a practical refrigerator have failed owing to lack of suitable thermocouple materials. In this paper it is proposed that semiconductors should be used and the factors governing their selection are discussed. It…
An optical, dielectric, and structural study has been carried out on NaNb${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ and the solid solution (Na,K)Nb${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$, both single crystals and ceramics being used. No evidence for ferroelectricity in NaNb${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ was found, and the crystal seems to be antiferroelectric in accordance…
Abstract Magnetic resonance spectra are described for two compounds containing covalently bound [IrCl6]2- complexes and one containing [IrBr6]2-, and the results are analyzed using the π-bonding theory developed by Stevens. The spectra show hyperfine structure lines arising from interaction of the magnetic electrons b…
Magnetostriction at saturation has been measured in various crystallographic directions in a single crystal of cobalt. Results are described by Mason's formula [see Eq. (1)] with 4 constants, which are now evaluated. Magnetization causes contractions as large as 100\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{…
In order to determine the measurements necessary to characterize the anisotropic energy and the saturation magnetostriction in hexagonal cobalt, a phenomenological derivation has been given for the equations which characterize the effects. Out to fourth rank tensors, the results are the same as those for circular symm…
Experimental investigation of electron ejection from atomically clean tungsten by singly and multiply charged ions of the noble gases is reported. Total electron yield, ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{i}$, and distribution in kinetic energy of the secondary electrons have been measured. Ion energies range from 10 to 1000 ev f…
Electrons ejected from atomically clean metals by slow ions of the noble gases arise in Auger transitions which involve either the direct neutralization of the ion or the de-excitation of an excited atom. A theory of these processes is presented in which the form of the distribution in energy and relative total yield,…

A rigorous solution of Maxwell's equations is carried through for the case of a rectangular magnetization curve. Formulas for the depth of penetration and the wave impedance are derived yielding a theoretical power input formula which relates to the popular quasi-theoretical formula of Rosenberg by just the factor 4/π.
The dynamic bulk modulus of a high molecular weight polyisobutylene is calculated from measured longitudinal-wave and shear moduli. A viscous or energy-dissipating process associated with pure volume deformation is found, which appears to be a relaxation process. The peak in absorption of the shear and bulk moduli and…
