New Method for solid‐state Bonding Between Ceramics and Metals

K. Suganuma、Taika Okamoto、Masahiko Shimada 等 4 位作者1983-07-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

A new method, for solid‐state bonding between ceramics and metals was developed. An interlayer, which is a composite of the materials to be bonded, is used. The technique can be applied to materials which cannot be bonded by conventional diffusion‐bonding methods because of thermal‐expansion mismatches. It is ex pecke…

Molecular Theories of Nematic Liquid Crystals

Martha A. Cotter1983-07-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

In this paper, the current state of the art of molecular theories of nematic mesophases is reviewed. For this purpose, the many theories of nematogens which have been proposed are grouped into two classes: (1) the Maier-Saupe theory and its extensions and variants, which assume that nematic long-range order is primari…

Salt‐Induced Conformational Transitions in Chromatin

В. Л. Макаров、Stephan I. DIMITROV、Peter Petrov1983-07-01European Journal of Biochemistry

The chromatin structure in solution has been studied by the flow linear dichroism method (LD) in a wide range of ionic strengths. It is found that increasing the ionic strength from 0.25 mM Na2EDTA, pH 7.0 to 100 mM NaCl leads to a strong reduction of the LD amplitude of chromatin and inversion of the LD sign from neg…

The 1-(trans-4′-n-Alkylcyclohexyl)-2-(4”-cyanophenyl)ethanes— A New Series of Stable Nematogens of Positive Dielectric Anisotropy

Nicholas Carr、G. W. Gray、D. G. McDonnell1983-07-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

The synthesis and some important properties of the l-(trans-4′-n-alkylcyclohexyl)-2-(4”-cyanophenyl)ethanes—where n-alkyl = C 1 to C 7—are described. These stable low melting materials have excellent properties comparable in many ways with those of the PCH materials wherein the cyclohexyl and phenyl rings are directly…

Diffusivity of gases and main‐chain cooperative motions in plasticized poly(vinyl chloride)

Abstract Permeability and time‐lag measurements for H 2 and CO in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) plasticized with tricresyl phosphate show that the apparent diffusion coefficients at first decrease as the plas‐ticizer concentration is increased. The diffusion coefficients then increase as the additive concentration is rai…

Infrared Characterization of α‐ and β‐Crystalline Silicon Nitride

J. P. Luongo1983-07-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

Silicon nitride, Si 3 N 4 , used as a passivating layer in microelectronics, exists in the crystalline forms α ‐ Si 3 N 4 and β ‐ Si 3 N 4 and as amorphous material. Although the two crystalline modifications differ only slightly in their structure, it has been found that each modification can be distinguished by infr…

Polylysine as an adhesive for the attachment of nanoplankton to substrates for electron microscopy

Harvey J. Marchant、D. Paul Thomas1983-07-01Journal of Microscopy

SUMMARY Nanoplankton can be readily attached to polylysine‐coated substrates for examination by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. This simple technique gives high yields of organisms which are consistently better preserved and less obscured by detritus than samples dried directly on to substrates.

Slow Crack Growth Behavior in Transformation‐Toughened Al 2 O 3 ‐ZrO 2 (Y 2 O 3 ) Ceramics

Paul Becher1983-07-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Significant increases in the critical fracture toughness (K IC ) over that of alumina are obtained by the stress‐induced phase transformation in partially stabilized ZrO 2 particles which are dispersed in alumina. More importantly, improved slow crack growth resistance is observed in the alumina ceramics containing pa…

Redox Delivery System for Brain-Specific, Sustained Release of Dopamine

Nicholas Bodor、James W. Simpkins1983-07-01Science

Dopamine was transformed into a redox chemical system for delivery to the brain. The lipoidal form allowed penetration of the blood-brain barrier. Oxidative and hydrolytic processes then transformed the delivery form into a quaternary ammonium precursor of dopamine. The quaternary ammonium precursor was rapidly elimin…

Classification of Proteins into Groups Based on Amino Acid Composition and Other Characters. I. Angular Distribution

Ken Nishikawa、Yasushi Kubota、Tatsuo Ooi1983-07-01The Journal of Biochemistry

Data on amino acid composition were collected in order to classify proteins into groups. The composition of a protein is expressed as a point in an orthogonal coordinate system, taking fractions of amino acids along 18 axes, which represent 18 amino acids (we use Asx and Glx for the sum of Asp and Asn and that of Glu…

Electrical and optical properties of ion-irradiated organic polymer Kapton H

Tatsumi Hioki、Shoji Noda、Masahiro Sugiura 等 6 位作者1983-07-01Applied Physics Letters

An organic polymer Kapton H film was irradiated with high-energy (∼MeV) N+2 ions. The specific resistivity of the film irradiated to a dose ∼1017 N/cm2 was estimated to be ∼10−2 Ω cm, which is about 20 orders of magnitude smaller than that of the unirradiated film. With increase of dose, the irradiated region of the f…
