THE ELECTROCHEMICAL BEHAVIOR OF THE NICKEL – NICKEL OXIDE ELECTRODE: PART I. KINETICS OF SELF-DISCHARGE

B. E. Conway、P. L. Bourgault1959-01-01Canadian Journal of Chemistry

The nickel – nickel oxide electrode forms the positive plate in the charged nickel–cadmium battery. After "charging" the electrode to a chemical state represented by the non-structural formula NiO x , where x can vary from about 1.4 to 1.8 depending on the current density and temperature, loss of oxygen and a fall of…

An internal friction study of polytetrafluoroethylene

N. G. McCrum1959-01-01Journal of Polymer Science

Abstract A torsion pendulum has been used to measure the internal friction of polytetrafluoroethylene. The crystallinity of the specimens varied form 48 to 92%, and the measurements were made over a wide temperature range. The site of each relaxation was assigned by observing the variation of relaxation strength and p…

The Influence of Noble Metal Alloy Additions on the Electrochemical and Corrosion Behavior of Titanium

Milton R. Stern、Herman Wissenberg1959-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

Alloying of titanium with small amounts of noble metals markedly improves its corrosion resistance in reducing‐type acids without any impairment of its high resistance to oxidizing media. The mixed potentials of titanium noble metal alloys are more noble than the critical potential for passivity of titanium in the sam…

Surface Tension of Some Liquid Oxides and Their Temperature Coefficients

W. D. Kingery1959-01-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Surface‐tension data are reported for liquid Al 2 O 3 , B 2 O 3 , GeO 2 , P 2 O 5 , and SiO 2 . Abnormal positive temperature coefficients for B 2 O 3 , GeO 2 , and SiO 2 are shown to be due mainly to changes in the liquid structure (dissociation) with temperature.

The deformation of foamed elastic materials

A. N. Gent、A. G. Thomas1959-01-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract A theoretical treatment is given which predicts the behavior of a foamed elastic material on the basis of a model consisting of a network of thin threads. Two cases are considered: ( 1 ) small strains, and ( 2 ) finite compressions, when the major part of the deformation of the threads is attributed to buckli…

Complete Absorption of Light by Thin Metal Films

T. Turbadar1959-01-01Proceedings of the Physical Society

Reflectances of non-opaque aluminium films were measured from the substrate side as a function of angle of incidence. For the p-polarization there is a maximum reflectance near the critical angle for the substrate; for a certain range of Al thicknesses this is followed by a sudden drop which can be to zero reflectance…

Chemical Etching of Silicon

Harry Robbins、Bertram Schwartz1959-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

The kinetics of the etching of silicon in the system HF , HNO 3 , and H 2 O was studied as a function of the composition of the etchant at 25°C. A triaxial plot of the etch rate vs. composition of the etchant shows two extreme modes of behavior. In the region of high nitric acid compositions, etch rates are functions…

Cavitation Microstreaming

S. A. Elder1959-01-01OpenAlex

In the research reported here an attempt has been made to discover by experiment what physical assumptions and approximations are appropriate in the theory of cavitation microstreaming, especially for cavitation bubbles located near solid boundaries. A systematic investigation of the phenomenon has been made and its d…

Theoretical Total-Energy Distribution of Field-Emitted Electrons

Russell D. Young1959-01-01Physical Review

The Fowler-Nordheim equation is derived in terms of total electron energy so as to obtain the total-energy distribution of field-emitted electrons. At 0\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K the new distribution width is less than $\frac{1}{3}$ of that obtained from the previous "normal-energy" theory. A surprising mirr…
