Dielectric function for alkali halide crystals

N. O. Lipari1971-05-01physica status solidi (b)

Abstract The wave‐vector dependent dielectric function for LiCl, LiBr, LiI, NaCl, NaBr, Nal, KCl, KBr, and KI is calculated using a model originally proposed by Fry. An approximate analytical expression for the screened Coulomb potential is also given.

Poly(ethylene sulfide). II. Thermal degradation and stabilization

E. H. Catsiff、Marina N. Gillis、R. H. Gobran1971-05-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A-1 Polymer Chemistry

Abstract High molecular weight poly(ethylene sulfide) undergoes severe thermal degradation at the high temperatures (220–260°C) required for processing in injection‐molding equipment. Thermal degradation of the polymer is accompanied by gas evolution and a decrease in melt viscosity. Stabilization of poly(ethylene sul…

Thermal Decomposition of Oxalates of Ammonium and Potassium

Harold A. Papazian、P. J. Pizzolato、J. A. PATRICK1971-05-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The thermal decomposition of oxalates of ammonium and potassium was studied by simultaneous TGA, DTA, and EGA (effluent gas analysis). Of the simple oxalates, the potassium compound is more stable than the lithium compound, as has been observed for the corresponding carbonates and sulfates. Ammonium oxalate is much le…

On the Fundamental Mechanism of Large Strain Plastic Deformation: Electron Microscopy of Metal Cutting Chips

Jonathan Black1971-05-01Journal of Engineering for Industry

The process of large strain plastic deformation, such as commonly found in the machining process, has been investigated by transmission and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The lamella-shear front nature of deformation in copper and aluminum chips has been elucidated fully and the occurrence of lamellae has be…

Determination of the Exchange Integrals in β-MnO2

N. Ohama、Yoshikazu Hamaguchi1971-05-01Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat of the β-MnO 2 powder specimen have been measured in the range 20 to 300°K and 77 to 100°K respectively. The measurements have also been made for the paramagnetic inelastic neutron scattering at room temperature by using time-of-flight method. The values of the Weiss temperatu…

Mechanism of Intergranular Corrosion of Austenitic Stainless Steels—Literature Review

Faith Wilson1971-05-01British Corrosion Journal

The literature on intergranular corrosion of austenitic stainless steels is reviewed, with particular reference to the theories of intergranular corrosion and the connexion between carbide morphology and the corrosion susceptibility. In the Strauss solution, intergranular corrosion is due to the formation of a chromiu…

Electron population analysis of accurate diffraction data. I. Formalisms and restrictions

P. Coppens、T. V. Willoughby、L. N. Csonka1971-05-01Acta Crystallographica Section A

A two-dimensional polynomial method is described which allows rapid evaluation of bond-scattering factors in a structure factor least-squares program. Correlation effects between electron population parameters are analyzed. It is concluded that simultaneous refinement of 2s2 and three 2p2 one-center populations is not…

Drop Calorimetric Measurements on some Chlorides, Sulfides, and Binary Melts

W. T. Thompson、S. N. Flengas1971-05-01Canadian Journal of Chemistry

Enthalpy content measurements on pure KCl, AgCl, CuCl, PbCl 2 , Ag 2 S, and PbS were made at temperatures up to 1000 °C using a sapphire calibrated drop calorimeter. Similar measurements were performed on AgCl–Ag 2 S and AgCl–KCl melts. These results determined values for the integral enthalpy of liquid–liquid mixing.

Relationship between compressive yield and tensile behavior in glassy thermoplastics

R. N. Haward、Bob Murphy、E. F. T. White1971-05-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A-2 Polymer Physics

Abstract The effect of temperature and strain rate on the compressive yield behavior of polystyrene is compared with the effect of the same variables on crazing in tension. The results support the conclusion of other, more extensive work, which shows that crazing involves the same types of molecular processes as those…
