The magnetic anisotropy of cobalt ferrite is considered to arise from the cobaltous ions in the crystalline field of a low symmetry. The crystalline field due to the averaged-out charge distribution of Co2+ and Fe3+ ions in the octahedral sites gives the lowest-lying twofold degenerate orbital level of the Co2+ ion an…
A review is given of the techniques that have been used in the construction of dynamic tension-testing machines. The problems involved in obtaining reliable tensile stress-strain curves at high strain rates are discussed. A new apparatus, designed to give accurate stress-strain curves in tension at strain rates of the…

X-ray-powder photographic studies of the plutoniumboron system revealed four plutonium borides, PuB, PuB/sub 2/, PuB/sub 4/, and PuB/sub 6/, and several other unidentified phases. The samples were prepared by heating powdered mixtures at 800 deg C in the range 60to 65 at.% boron and at 1200 deg C in the range 40 to 95…
Abstract The spontaneous magnetization at the absolute zero and Curie point of the face-centred cubic phase in the binary alloys of Pd, Rh, Ru, Pt, Ir and Os in cobalt and of Rh, Ir and Os in nickel have been measured as a function of composition, and older measurements on Pd, Ru and Pt in nickel have been re-assessed…
Abstract This paper describes a kinematical theory of electron microscope images of dislocations observed by transmission in thin crystalline foils. The contrast is essentially phase contrast in the Bragg diffracted beams, the phase differences being due to the displacements of the atoms from their positions in the id…
A procedure based on the Boltzmann equation is given for evaluating the harmonic currents in an electron beam in the presence of a velocity distribution. Employing the above method, the second harmonic current in a drifting (initially volocity modulated) beam possessing a velocity distribution is evaluated.
In the presence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy the magnetization of a ferromagnet depends upon its orientation as well as upon the temperature. The temperature dependences of the anisotropic parts of the magnetization have been worked out, both classically and quantum-mechanically, for all symmetries and for ferro-…

Abstract Multiple bands or strata of soil materials, which are finer textured and browner or redder colored than the material above or below, have been studied. These bands are common in unconsolidated sandy Coastal Plain and glacial deposits. In Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina they are found to lie nearl…
