On the ability of drops or bubbles to stick to non-horizontal surfaces of solids

E. B. Dussan V.、Robert T. Chow1983-12-01OpenAlex

It is common knowledge that relatively small drops or bubbles have a tendency to stick to the surfaces of solids. Two specific problems are investigated: the shape of the largest drop or bubble that can remain attached to an inclined solid surface; and the shape and speed at which it moves along the surface when these…

Crystal Plasticity

R.J. Asaro1983-12-01OpenAlex

Significant progress has been made during the past decade in incorporating micromechanics in continuum descriptions of inelastic deformation. This has led to the development of a rather comprehensive constitutive theory for rate-dependent and idealized rate-independent crystalline materials that deform plastically by…

Effect of pressure on Raman spectra of solid chlorine

Peter Johannsen、W. B. Holzapfel1983-11-30Journal of Physics C Solid State Physics

The effect of pressure on Raman spectra of solid chlorine has been measured up to 45 GPa using a diamond anvil cell. The six Raman-active modes could be observed in first-order Stokes and anti-Stokes spectra at room temperature. The accidental degeneracy of the B 3g and A g lattice modes is lifted under pressure.

Are guanine nucleotide binding proteins a distinct class of regulatory proteins?

Simon M. Hughes1983-11-28FEBS Letters

Proteins which bind guanine nucleotides are found in a diverse set of key regulatory positions. They are involved in hormone action, visual transduction, protein synthesis and microtubule assembly. In addition to their ability to bind guanine nucleotides these proteins possess several other common features. (i) They a…

Gadolinium as a contrast agent for NMR.

Jean‐Marie Caillé、Bernard Lemanceau、Bruno Bonnemain1983-11-23PubMed

Gadolinium chloride (GdCl3) was studied as a contrast agent for nuclear magnetic resonance. This rare-earth element dramatically alters proton resonance (paramagnetic moment = 10.8 Bohr magnetons). Acute toxicity was determined by intravenous injections in mice; mean lethal dose was 100-200 mg of GdCl3 . 6 H2O/kg. Cha…

X-Ray-Photoelectron Final-State Screening in Transition-Metal Compounds

B. W. Veal、A. P. Paulikas1983-11-21Physical Review Letters

The cation $3s$ levels in fluorides of $3d$ transition elements have been systematically examined with use of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is shown that $3s$ line shapes are determined by the $3d$ populations (and consequent exchange splittings) associated with different core-hole screening conditions. The scr…

Dynamics of Interfacial Pattern Formation

Eshel Ben‐Jacob、Nigel Goldenfeld、J. S. Langer 等 4 位作者1983-11-21Physical Review Letters

A phenomenological model of dendritic solidification incorporating interfacial kinetics, crystalline anisotropy, and a local approximation for the dynamics of the thermal diffusion field is proposed. The preliminary results are in qualitative agreement with natural dendritelike pattern formation.

Self-diffusion and antimony diffusion in tellurium

Martin Werner、H. Mehrer、H. Siethoff1983-11-20Journal of Physics C Solid State Physics

Self-diffusion in tellurium single crystals has been measured over the temperature range 496-640K using 127m Te as radiotracer and a sputtering technique for serial sectioning. Diffusion parallel to the c axis is described by D/sub /// T =6*10 -5 exp(-1.53 eV/kT) m 2 s -1 and perpendicular to the c axis by D perpendic…

The sodium tungsten bronzes: a study of the changes in electronic structure with composition using high-resolution electron spectroscopy

M.D. Hill、R.G. Egdell1983-11-20Journal of Physics C Solid State Physics

The variation with composition of the electronic structure of polycrystalline sodium tungsten bronzes Na x WO 3 (0<x<1) has been studied using a combination of high-resolution electron spectroscopic techniques. Samples on either side of the metal-nonmetal transition (x approximately 0.25 from conductivity data)…

Molecular dynamics and structures of amine boranes of the type R3N.BH3. II. NMR investigation of H3N.BH3

E. C. Reynhardt、C F Hoon1983-11-20Journal of Physics C Solid State Physics

For pt.I see ibid., vol.16, p.6129 (1983). Proton second moment, T 1 H .T 1 rho H and T 1 11B measurements over the temperature range 330K>T>46K are reported. At low temperatures tunnelling of the protons of the NH 3 group influences the second moment and T 1 rho H results seriously. An analysis of the results h…

C F Hoon、E. C. Reynhardt1983-11-20Journal of Physics C Solid State Physics

The results of an X-ray diffraction investigation of powdered H 3 N.BH 3 are reported. A first-order rotational order-disorder phase transition has been observed at 225K. In the high-temperature tetragonal phase the space group permits twelvefold reorientations of GH 3 and NH 3 groups. The cell parameters are linear f…

Double excitation transitions inMn2+-doped alkali halides

M. Moreno、Fernando Rodríguez、J. A. Aramburu 等 5 位作者1983-11-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

It is shown in this work that the room-temperature excitation spectra of as-grown crystals of LiF, NaF, NaCl, KCl, and KBr doped with ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{2+}$ reveal the existence of double excitation peaks. These peaks are related to the formation of precipitated phases containing ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{2+}$ in the alkali halid…
