Epoxides of unsaturated fatty acids as anti‐rust additives in water‐based cutting fluids

S. WATANABE、Tsutomu Fujita、Masami Sakamoto1988-08-01Journal of the American Oil Chemists Society

Abstract Epoxides from a variety of unsaturated fatty acids were prepared, and corrosion tests for these products as water‐based cutting fluid additives were performed. The triethanolamine salt of an epoxide of undecylenic acid showed very effective rust‐inhibiting properties in a water‐based cutting fluid.

Thermal Transformation of Talc as Studied by Electron-Optical Methods

Helena de Souza Santos、Keiji Yada1988-08-01Clays and Clay Minerals

Abstract The thermal decomposition of a fibrous talc was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAD). Small changes in the lengths of a and b unit-cell parameters were noticeable at 500°C, but the talc laths did not change morphologically until 800°C. At this temperat…

Nitridation of polycrystalline titanium as studied by in situ angle‐resolved x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy

A. Ermolieff、Pascal Bernard、S. Marthon 等 4 位作者1988-08-01Surface and Interface Analysis

Abstract Nitridation of polycrystalline titanium was investigated in situ at about 550°C by angle‐resolved x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The nitrogen pressure was varied from 10 −4 mbar to 1 mbar. The distribution of nitrogen in the titanium and the chemical bonding present were deduced from XPS measurements…

Temperature Dependence of Hardness of Alumina‐Based Ceramics

Charles P. Alpert、Helen M. Chan、Stephen J. Bennison 等 4 位作者1988-08-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Hardness was measured as a function of temperature (20° to 1000°C) for several Al 2 O 3 ceramics, including single‐crystal sapphire and polycrystalline aluminas containing different amounts of second phase. Hardness decreased steadily with increasing temperature for all materials tested, in accordance with a semiempir…

Direct measurement of orientation correlations in a two-dimensional liquid-crystal system

David H. Van Winkle、Noel A. Clark1988-08-01Physical Review A

The behavior of a two-dimensional orientation field has been studied directly in space and time. In a freely suspended thin film of tilted smectic liquid crystal the local projection onto the film plane of the molecular orientation averaged through the film forms a two-dimensional (2D) vector field C^(x,y) with local…

Introduction to the computer image processing of electron micrographs of two‐dimensionally ordered biological structures

Murray Stewart1988-08-01Journal of Electron Microscopy Technique

Methods are described for the analysis of electron micrographs of regular biological objects. Fourier-based processing of one-dimensionally ordered arrays is described by way of introduction, before analysing two-dimensional crystals in projection with the aim of enhancing signal:noise ratio and thus of feint features…

Abstract The infrared absorption spectra of a palygorskite sample from Cáceres, Spain, showed two previously unreported bands in the OH-stretching region at 3420–3440 and 3220–3230 cm −1 after evacuation at 90°–230°C. These bands, which reached maximum intensity after the sample was heated at 150°C, were assigned to O…

Microstructural Characterization and Fracture Toughness of Cordierite‐ZrO 2 Glass‐Ceramics

Michael McCoy、A. H. Heuer1988-08-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Crystallization of an MgO‐Al 2 O 3 ‐SiO 2 ‐ZrO 2 sintered glass frit was studied. Heat treatment at 850° or 900°C caused initial crystallization of μ‐cordierite and tetragonal ( t ) ZrO 2 . The t ‐ZrO 2 crystallized with an irregular dendritic morphology and could be transformed to monoclinic ( m ) symmetry under cert…

R. Richter、H. Eschrig1988-08-01Journal of Physics F Metal Physics

LCAO-CPA theory is applied to substitutionally disordered ferromagnetic BCC FeCo alloys. Calculations are based on charge and spin self-consistent LCAO parameters determined for the pure component metals within the local spin density functional theory. The magnetic properties of Fe-Mn-Al alloys in the disordered phase are investigated through the M\"ossbauer technique. The magnetic phase diagram in the bcc structural phase is obtained as a function of the Al concentration ($q$) and Mn concentration ($x$).
