Controlled engineering of isolated solid state quantum systems is one of the most prominent goals in modern nanotechnology. In this letter we demonstrate a previously unknown quantum system namely silicon carbide tetrapods. The tetrapods have a cubic polytype core (3C) and hexagonal polytype legs (4H)--a geometry that…

Crystallization of supersaturated liquids usually starts by heterogeneous nucleation. Mounting evidence shows that even homogeneous nucleation in simple liquids takes place in two steps; first a dense amorphous precursor forms, and the crystalline phase appears via heterogeneous nucleation in/on the precursor cluster.…

Using the framework of potential energy landscape theory, we describe two in silico designs for self-assembling helical colloidal superstructures based upon dipolar dumbbells and Janus-type building blocks, respectively. Helical superstructures with controllable pitch length are obtained using external magnetic field…

The 300 K equation of state of cubic (zinc-blende) boron phosphide BP has been studied by in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation up to 55 GPa. The measurements have been performed under quasi-hydrostatic conditions using a Ne pressure medium in a diamond anvil cell. A fit of the experiment…

The structural arrest of a polymeric suspension might be driven by an increase of the cross-linker concentration, which drives the gel transition, as well as by an increase of the polymer density, which induces a glass transition. These dynamical continuous (gel) and discontinuous (glass) transitions might interfere,…

Nanofriction of Xe, Kr and N₂ monolayers deposited on graphene was explored with a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) at temperatures between 25 and 50 K. Graphene was grown by chemical vapour deposition and transferred to the QCM electrodes with a polymer stamp. It was found to strongly adhere to the gold electrodes a…

Developing graphene-based nanoelectronics hinges on opening a band gap in the electronic structure of graphene, which is commonly achieved by breaking the inversion symmetry of the graphene lattice via an electric field (gate bias) or asymmetric doping of graphene layers. Here we introduce a new design strategy that p…

The evaluation of the long term stability of a material requires the estimation of its long-time dynamics. For amorphous materials such as structural glasses, it has proven difficult to predict the long-time dynamics starting from static measurements. Here we consider how long one needs to monitor the dynamics of a st…

Owing to lack of time translational invariance, aging soft glassy materials do not obey fundamental principles of linear viscoelasticity. We show that by transforming the linear viscoelastic framework from a real time domain into an effective time domain, wherein the material clock is readjusted to account for evoluti…

Most III–V semiconductors, which acquire the zinc-blende phase as bulk materials, adopt the metastable wurtzite phase when grown in the form of nanowires. These are new semiconductors with new optical properties, in particular, a different electronic band gap when compared with that grown in the zinc-blende phase. The…

Two new methods to produce nanopowders of B12P2 boron subphosphide by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis have been proposed. Bulk polycrystalline B12P2 with microhardness of H V = 35(3) GPa and stability in air up to 1300 K has been prepared by sintering these powders at 5.2 GPa and 2500 K.

A low temperature, isothermal, gas-phase, recyclable process is described for the partial oxidation of methane to methanol over Cu-ZSM-5. Activation in NO at 150 °C followed by methane reaction and steam extraction (both at 150 °C) allowed direct observation of methanol at the reactor outlet.
