In the title compound extended sheets of cobalt(II) ions, linked in a square array by bridging formates, couple antiferromagnetically. Spin canting generates residual spin on the sheets, and interaction between the sheets leads to long-range ferromagnetic ordering and spontaneous magnetization below 9 K.

Organic−inorganic hybrids prepared by the sol−gel process are investigated by infrared spectroscopy at room temperature. The matrix of the so-called ureasils is a silica network to which oligopolyoxyethylene chains are grafted by means of urea cross-links. The ureasils prepared U(2000), U(900), and U(600) are obtained…

Using self-assembly techniques, x-ray reflectivity measurements, and computer simulations, we study the effective interaction between charged polymer rods and surfaces. Long-time Brownian dynamics simulations are used to measure the effective adhesion force acting on the rods in a model consisting of a planar array of…

Sodium borohydride reduction of silver ions in aqueous dispersions of exfoliated graphite oxide (GO) resulted in the formation of remarkably monodisperse 100 Å diameter oblate Ag particles that are effectively protected by 5 Å thick GO sheets, Ag−GO. Ag−GO could be self-assembled onto poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chl…

The photoluminescence and the local structure of sol−gel derived organic−inorganic hybrids, so-called ureasils, are discussed. Their host matrix is a silica-based network to which different numbers of oxyethylene repeat units 8.5, 15.5, and 40.5 for U(600), U(900), and U(2000), respectively are covalently grafted by m…

Ultrasonic irradiation of a slurry of amorphous silica microspheres, zinc acetate, and thioacetamide in an aqueous medium for 3 h under ambient air yields zinc sulfide coated on silica. The powder X-ray diffraction of the initial zinc sulfide−silica (ZSS) powder yields diffraction peaks corresponding to the ZnS phase.…

The adsorption of CO 2 on NiO(111)/Ni(111) and OD/NiO(111)/Ni(111) was studied by infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). When the surfaces were exposed to CO 2 at 123 K, peaks of adsorbates appeared at 1263 and 910 cm - 1 on NiO(111), while a peak appeared at 1267 cm - 1 on OD/NiO(111). The peaks at 1263…
