Abstract A formula is derived with the aid of which it is possible to compute the dielectric constant of a compact crystal from that of a crystalline powder. The formula is checked by means of experimental data.
For small loadings (up to about 10 percent volume parts) the colloidal carbon black spheres may be considered as suspended in a continuous rubber matrix. In the present paper this model is generalized for ellipsoidal (including plate- and rod-like) filler particles and it is extended to the computation of various prop…
A re-entrant cylindrical cavity has been adapted to measure the dielectric constant and power factor of small disk samples of insulating materials. The methods of measurement, mechanical details, and electric coupling and detecting circuits all are described. A single cavity can be utilized only over a frequency range…

Abstract Stress-strain data are given for two types of vulcanized rubber: (1) an 8% S rubber, and (2) a latex rubber. The types of deformation studied were simple elongation, 2-dimensional extension (or compression), pure shear, and combined elongation and shear. Comparison with the theoretical relations based on the…

Two mechanical properties of rubber-like materials relevant to the design of anti-vibration devices are the dynamic elastic compression modulus and the associated resilience. A method is described for the evaluation of these properties over the temperature range 5° to 40° C. Results are given for natural rubber, for t…
A bstract The volume expansion of cristobalite, as it passes through the low‐temperature inversion range, was studied by means of a dilatometer in which the cristobalite expanded against a column of mercury. The volume change was measured in a capillary tube attached to the mercury column. The temperature of inversion…
A bstract Physical and chemical properties are discussed for Vycor‐brand 96% silica glasses prepared from glasses of lower silica content by a leaching process, and a brief résumé of this process is given. The intermediate porous glass and a translucent or white opaque form of the final 96% silica glass made by the Mu…
The effect of the filler upon the modulus of compounded rubber has been calculated with the aid of some simplifying assumptions. From these calculations it is found that the increase in modulus, caused by the filler, is directly proportional to the volume loading, and is independent of the particle size of the filler.…
A high vacuum, curved-crystal spectrograph was constructed for study of the $K$-absorption edge and the accompanying secondary absorption structures for evaporated films of sodium metal and of the sodium halides. Comparison of the $K{\ensuremath{\beta}}_{x}$ emission line and the $K$-absorption edge for metallic sodiu…

Elongation of swollen vulcanized rubber, or other polymeric materials possessing random network structures, should increase the amount of liquid absorbed (dissolved) at equilibrium with an excess of the swelling agent. According to a previously published equation relating to the thermodynamics of stretching and swelli…
Vapor pressures of crystalline KCl, KBr, KI, and NaCl have been measured in the pressure range of 10−1 to 10−7 mm by a surface ionization method. Heats and entropies of vaporization are calculated from the data. The heats of vaporization at 0°K and entropies at 298°K are also calculated. From the data, saturated KCl v…
