Amino‐Acid Sequence of Feather Keratin from Fowl

Kunio Arai、R. Takahashi、Yoshiko Yokote 等 4 位作者1983-05-01European Journal of Biochemistry

The amino acid sequence of a single polypeptide chain, B-4, from fowl feather barbs has been determined. The B-4 chain was found to consist of 96 amino acid residues and to have a molecular weight of 10206 in the S-carboxymethylated form. The N terminus of this protein was an N-acetylserine residue. The B-4 protein co…

On the fracture of brittle-matrix/ductile-particle composites

V. D. Krstic1983-05-01Philosophical magazine. A/Philosophical magazine. A. Physics of condensed matter. Structure, defects and mechanical properties

A mechanism for the toughening of brittle matrices with ductile particles is presented. It is shown that the constraints imposed on the particles by the rigid matrix suppress plastic deformation of the particles at crack tips so that the main contribution to composite toughness comes from ligament formation in the mat…

Experimental energy-loss function,Im[−1ε(q,ω)], for aluminum

Philip E. Batson、J. Silcox1983-05-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

We describe highly accurate (0.2-1%) intensity measurements for the inelastic scattering of 75-keV electrons in \ensuremath{\sim} 1000-\AA{}-thick polycrystalline aluminum films in the region of (0.0-3.1)-${\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ transferred wave vector and (0-100)-eV energy loss. Effect of MgO Solute on the Kinetics of Grain Growth in A1 2 O 3

Stephen J. Bennison、Martin P. Harmer1983-05-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The kinetics of grain growth in fully dense Al 2 O 3 with and without MgO solute additions were measured. The MgO was found to retard boundary migration and to rkvelop more uniform microstructures. A grain‐growth mechanism involving solute partitioning of segregated ions (calcium and magnesium) between different bound…

Generalized relations betweend-orbital occupancies of transition-metal atoms and electron-density multipole population parameters from X-ray diffraction data

A. Holladay、Peter Q. Leung、P. Coppens1983-05-01Acta Crystallographica Section A Foundations of Crystallography

Generalized relations relating multipole population parameters to d-orbital occupancies of transition-metal atoms are presented. The relations are cast in the form of a 15 × 15 matrix which reduces to smaller size for site symmetries higher than {\bar 1}. The matrix takes into account differences in normalization of d…

Impact fracture mechanisms in polymer blends: Rubber‐toughened nylon

Souheng Wu1983-05-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Physics Edition

Abstract The impact fracture mechanisms of rubber‐toughened nylon are analyzed by measuring the energy dissipated in several different processes during notched fracture. An energy balance is thus established for the impact fracture. The stress‐whitened zone is shown to be the energy dissipation zone, having an energy…

Toughened nylon resins

S. Y. Hobbs、R. C. Bopp、V. H. Watkins1983-05-01Polymer Engineering and Science

Abstract The impact failure of blends of nylon 6,6 and low density polyethylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PEgMA) is discussed in terms of fracture morphology, composition, and particle adhesion and dispersion. Basic criteria for effective impact modification of these materials are developed. A numerical model for…

Electron-microscopical approach to a structural model of intima collagen

Heinz Furthmayr、Herbert Wiedemann、Rupert Timpl 等 5 位作者1983-05-01Biochemical Journal

Intima collagen was studied by electron microscopy (rotary shadowing and negative staining) and by analytical ultracentrifugation. It was found that the monomeric unit (Mr 170 000) consists of a 105 nm-long triple helix terminated by a small globular domain (Mr about 30 000) at one end and a large globular domain (Mr…

Mechanisms of Ozonation of N-(1,3-Dimethylbutyl)-N′-Phenyl-p-Phenylenediamine

Robert P. Lattimer、E. R. Hooser、Robert W. Layer 等 4 位作者1983-05-01Rubber Chemistry and Technology

Abstract The ozonation products of a common rubber antiozonant, N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl- p -phenylenediamine (HPPD), have been separated by liquid chromatography and identified by mass spectrometry. Three principal mechanisms appear to govern the ozonation of HPPD. Amine oxide formation leads to observed nitro…

Abstract Nickel compounds (NiCl2 and NiCl2(2,2′-bipyridine)) catalyze polycondensation of dihalothiophenes (2,5-dihalothiophenes, 2,4-dibromothiophene, and 3-methyl-2,5-dibromothiophene) by dehalogenation with magnesium to give the corresponding poly(thienylene) type polymers (poly(2,5-thienylene), poly(2,4-thienylene…
