Potassium chloride crystals have been doped with ${\mathrm{Sm}}^{2+}$ ions to concentrations of 5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{19}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$, resulting in identifiable ${\mathrm{Sm}}^{2+}$ absorption spectra. Heating of the doped crystals in K vapor produces no visible change in the…
Abstract The Plasticity Retention Index (PRI) has been developed as an objective test for the oxidizability of raw natural rubber and has recently been associated with the Standard Malaysian Rubber Scheme. Oxidizability as measured by PRI significantly affects behavior of rubber in the factory and in service performan…
The phenomenon of carbon deposition on specimen surfaces during electron-probe microanalysis has been studied using a stearate crystal for analysis. Contamination was found to build up at a rate which rapidly interfered with light element microanalysis and depended upon conditions prevailing in the specimen chamber of…
The first magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant of plastically deformed nickel single crystals was studied as a function of deformation. Contributions of specific types of imperfection, viz., interstitials, vacancies, and disclocations on the ``effective magnetic anisotropy constant'' K1′ were analyzed from the recov…
An irradiation program to evaluate BeO as a moderator or fuel matrix material in nuclear power reactors has been completed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The primary objectives were: to establish the limits of stability of sintered BeO of various grain sizes and densities toward fast-neutrons and to determine m…
Abstract A new high‐temperature elastomer, SiB‐2, has been investigated by stress relaxation, modulus‐temperature, and volume‐‐temperature techniques. SiB‐2 was found to be more stable than a related elastomer, radiation‐cured silicone rubber, having about twice as long as a chemical relaxation time at 250°C. Possible…
It is proved that the modulus of the Fourier-transform of the magnetic anomaly of a two-dimensional magnetized body is determined by two parameters less than those determining the anomaly itself. This is true for any component of the field. A method is developed to calculate estimates of the Fourier-transform from a l…
The m, n matrix element of an arbitrary potential function V(q) in the one-dimensional harmonic-oscillator representation is shown to be given by 〈m | V(q) | n〉= ∑ r=0mα(m!n!)12r!(m−r)!(n−r)! ∫ −∞∞dyg(αy)e−12y2(iy)m+n−2r,where α≡(2ω/ℏ)½, and g(αy) is the Fourier transform of V(q). This formula is specialized to the ca…

The tunneling characteristics of junctions consisting of two normal metals separated by a thin insulating film have been analyzed theoretically,1,2and the main features of the analyses have been corroborated by extensive experimental studies. On the other hand, relatively little attention has been given to junctions i…
Magnesium chloride dodecahydrate crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with unit-cell dimensions a= 8.59, b= 14-40, c= 8.75 A, fl= 129"6 , D~= 1.241 g.cm-3, Z=2.
Glasses in the system CaO–SiO 2 were prepared with the composition varying from 40 to 55 mole % CaO. The Na 2 O impurity content ranged from 0.01 to 1.30 mole %. The electrical resistivity was insensitive to the Na 2 O content but decreased with increasing CaO concentration. The activation energy for conduction ranged…
THE influence of the sheet thickness on fatigue‐crack propagation was studied on specimens of 2024‐T3 alclad sheet of five thicknesses, viz. 0.6, 1, 2, 3 and 4 mm. It turned out that cracks grow faster in thicker sheets. The different states of stress at the crack tip probably cause the thickness effect.
The absorption spectrum of an Mn2+-doped KCl crystal has been measured at room temperature. The observed bands are assigned as transitions from the 6A1(S) ground state to various excited quartet levels of a Mn2+ ion in a cubic crystalline field. The observed band energies are fitted with four parameters B, C, Dq, and…
Abstract The reaction of 1,2‐butylene oxide with fatty alcohols of 12 to 18 carbon atoms was investigated and products were compared with those from the propylene oxide reaction. A 60% yield of the first derivative was obtained for the butylene oxide reaction compared with a maximum yield of 50% for the propylene oxid…
Abstract The malate-lactate transhydrogenase of Micrococcus lactilyticus has been purified and found to be a colorless protein with a molecular weight of approximately 99,000. The enzyme catalyzes the transfer of hydrogen from 3- and 4-carbon straight chain l-α-hydroxy acids to α-keto acids. The reactions catalyzed ar…
A theory of the eddy-current-limited complex permeability of ferromagnetic sheet is presented that takes account, for the first time, of the rotational permeability of domain interiors as well as wall motion. Models with contrasting domain structure are investigated; these are found to behave similarly when the domain…
The temperature dependence of sublattice magnetizations and the specific heat due to magnetic ordering of Mn 4 N were measured in order to study the origin of the anomalous thermomagnetic curve of the compound. The observed magnetization-temperature curves of two sublattices are more convex upwards than those of norma…
Removal of soda from a glass surface at high temperature can, on cooling, give appreciable strengthening due to lowering of the expansion coefficient at the surface. Soda depletion has been accomplished previously by treating a high‐expansion soda‐lime glass with SO 2 in the presence of oxygen and water. The depletion…
