Recognition of the importance of electric quadrupoles allows a new interpretation of the flexoelectric phenomenon to be proposed. Meyer's model and the influence of charge are also discussed.

The stacking-fault energies of a number of copper alloys with electron-atom ratios less than or equal to 1·10 have been measured from observations of single dissociated dislocations imaged using the weak-beam method of electron microscopy. The results are compared with previous determinations made using the extrapolat…

The rare earth (lanthanide) oxides, although constituting a closely related group of compounds, exhibit a rich variety of characteristic behaviors and solid-state properties, including several features that make them interesting subjects for Catalytic studies. Abundances and costs of these materials parallel those of…
Type I and type III collagen extracted from skin was purified by differential salt precipitation and chromatography. By heating to 37 degrees, type I formed after a lag phase a floppy and opalescent gel of high optical density and type III formed more rapidly a translucent and rigid gel of low optical density. Additio…
The effect of neutron irradiation and subsequent recovery has been studied for NbO single crystals of a defective NaCl structure containing 25% vacancies of niobium and oxygen. A very large increase (about 1%) in the lattice constant is observed after irradiation of 1.5 × 1019 and 1 × 1020 nvt (> 1 MeV). From the inte…
The presence and nature of surface species formed on a nickel electrode after polarisation in 0.5 mol dm–3 sulphuric acid and 0.5 mol dm–3 sulphuric acid + 0.005 mol dm–3 nickel sulphate has been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The film produced in the active, prepassive, passive and transpassive reg…
Article Clinoptilolite: the distribution of potassium atoms and its role in thermal stability was published on December 1, 1977 in the journal Zeitschrift für Kristallographie - Crystalline Materials (volume 145, issue 1-6).
General formulas are derived for the estimation of the number of fiber-to-fiber contacts in fiber assemblies with arbitrary distributions of orientation and fiber length. The average number of contacts per unit volume of an assembly ñ v is given by [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text] In this equation fi is t…
Abstract The polymerization of organic compounds in glow discharge (plasma polymerization) was investigated by using pulsed R.F. discharge (100 μsec on, 900 μsec off). The effects of pulsed discharge on polymer deposition rate, pressure change in plasma, ESR signals of free spins in both plasma polymer and substrate,…
The effects of porosity and grain size on the magnetic properties of NiZn ferrites were examined on groups of specimens with controlled porosity and grain size; both the permeability and the B‐H loop were measured. The demagnetizing factor, which is proportional to porosity, was estimated on the basis of the permeabil…
We discuss the calculational procedures of the kernels of GCM, RGM and OCM and some properties of them related to their calculation. The GCM kernels for various types of systems are treated and methods are discussed on the analytical evaluation and on the decomposition in terms of the number of nucleons exchanged betw…
The adsorption of polymer chains on small objects in solution, such as micelles, is discussed using scaling results to describe the confinement energy. Adsorption on small spheres and on clusters of such spheres is discussed and appropriate power laws for the dimensions and energies are derived. For non-interacting ob…
A linearized theory of the forced radial oscillations of a gas bubble in a liquid is presented. Particular attention is devoted to the thermal effects. It is shown that both the effective polytropic exponent and the thermal damping constant are strongly dependent on the driving frequency. This dependence is illustrate…
The development and the current state of knowledge of ferroelectric liquid crystals are reviewed. Symmetry considerations first indicated that a ferroelectric phase should exist. Synthesis of new molecules led to the first experiments on electro-optical properties, indicating a spontaneous polarization. Various studie…
Pb(Ti, Zr)O3 ceramics doped with Al, Mn or Fe exhibit constricted or asymmetrically displaced hysteresis loops. This distortion is due to an internal bias field Ei which can exceed the coercive field strength. Ei depends on the Ti/Zr ratio and on the kind of dope, and it increases with increasing doping concentration.…
The first analysis of a problem in cavitation and bubble dynamics was made by Rayleigh (1917), who solved the problem of the collapse of an empty cavity in a large mass of liquid. Rayleigh also considered in this same paper the problem of a gas-filled cavity under the assumption that the gas undergoes isothermal com…

Data on the catalytic properties of various substances (metals, their alloys, simple and complex oxides, and zeolites containing metal cations) in the oxidation of ammonia are described systematically and reviewed. The kinetics and mechanism of the reaction are discussed and the factors determining the activity and se…
Abstract An atomistic study of the motion of the 1/2 [111] screw dislocation was carried out for a shear stress applied on {112} planes and for uniaxial stresses along [012], [001] and [111]. Central force interactions described by the three different empirical potentials used in the previous work (Duesbery, Vitek &am…
