Magnetization curves and hysteresis loops for field-oriented powders of Smn+1Co3n+5B2n (n=0, 1, and 3) and PrCo5 were measured at T=4.2 K and partly at 77 K, under a strong pulsed field up to 36 T. Magnetic measurements for Smn+1Co3n+1B2n (n=1, 2, and 3) compounds were also performed. Huge anisotropy fields of 120 T f…

A theory of Raman scattering in quasi-two-dimensional crystals is presented, emphasizing resonance enhancement at the excitonic transition appropriate to the ${\mathit{M}}_{0}$ and ${\mathit{M}}_{1}$ edges. The effect of electron-hole Coulomb interaction leads to metamorphism of the critical points. Our experimental r…

Using a simulation experiment, transient optical 30-Hz elements which respond to dc signal changes in thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display are investigated. After dc voltage is applied, even without dc voltage, the 30-Hz element appears and decays to the level in the steady state. This is explained by the gener…

Considerable improvement of the magnetic properties has been achieved by nitrogen absorption in the RFe10Mo2 compounds with ThMn12-type structure. A lattice expansion has been observed (a=8.6781, c=4.8531 Å for the nitride and a=8.5869, c=4.8002 Å for the nitrogen-free sample) from N2 absorption and a determination of…

Films of binary SmFe12 and Sm(Fe1−xTx)12 compounds, where x≤0.12, and T=V, V-Ti, and Ti, exhibiting the ThMn12-type tetragonal crystal structure have been successfully synthesized. These films were crystallized by rf sputter deposition onto Al2O3 substrates preheated to 400–550 °C. The lattice parameters of the SmFe12…

Magnetic properties are reported for nitrides of the formula (Sm1−xRx)2Fe17Ny, where R=Y, Tb, or mischmetal and y=2.5 to 2.8. Substantial replacement of Sm by R is observed for Sm2Fe17−60% by mischmetal and 100% by Y or Tb. In all cases nitrogenation expands the lattice and increases Tc by 300 to 400 K. Magnetization…

The microstructure of Fe-Nd-B based magnets consists of mainly Fe14Nd2B (Φ) grains embedded in a eutectic matrix of mainly Nd plus some Fe4Nd1.1B4 (η) and Fe-Nd phases stabilized by impurities. The addition of Al or Ga to Fe-Nd-B material leads to the formation of quite different ternary intergranular phases based on…

NdFeB is an important class of new magnetic materials, however corrosion resistance is a serious concern and literature on the electrochemical behavior of NdFeB is scarce. This paper reports the results of an electrochemical investigation of the corrosion behavior of sintered NdFeB magnets obtained from three manufact…

Amorphous wires are prepared by the in-water quenching technique. This procedure gives rise to local magnetoelastic anisotropies arising from the coupling between frozen-in internal stresses and magnetostriction. Azimuthal and axial components of internal stresses have been experimentally confirmed by the asymmetry of…

Formation and desorption of aluminum hydride from hydrogen covered Al(110), Al(100), and Al(111) has been investigated, using thermal desorption spectroscopy. Both desorption of aluminum hydride and molecular hydrogen has been detected with branching ratios depending on surface structure. Production of aluminum hydrid…

The surface core-level shifts of the Al(100) and Al(111) surfaces have been measured by high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy. For the Al(100) surface we obtain a value of (-96\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5) meV. This value is in excellent agreement with a recent ab initio calculation by Feibelman. The surface cor…

Mechanical alloying is applied to prepare Nd-Fe-B, Sm-Fe-TM type (TM: V, Ti, Zr), and interstitial nitride and carbide permanent magnets. Starting from elemental powders, the hard magnetic phases are formed by milling in a planetary ball mill and a following solid-state reaction at relatively low temperatures. For Nd-…

Melt-spun Nd-Fe-B ribbons are limited to remanences of about 8 kG by the random orientation of the Nd2Fe14B grains. Hot deformation (die upsetting) causes these grains to reorient with the c axis aligned along the press direction, resulting in a 50% increase in the remanence (12 kG). Previously others have produced ma…
