The as-prepared samples are short and rod-like in shape with a diameter of about 10 nm and length of about 20–30 nm. The excitation spectra indicate that Sm <sup>3+</sup> ions transfer energy to Eu <sup>3+</sup> ions, which increases the color purity of Eu <sup>3+</sup> ions in the GdVO <sub>4</sub> system.
