Investigation of nematic ordering using electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation

The macroscopic third-order nonlinearity Γ of a nematic liquid crystal has been measured for the first time with the technique of dc electric-field-induced optical second-harmonic generation. The effect of nematic ordering on Γ is observed. Results are in good agreement with theoretical calculations.
