Crystal Growth and Properties of Mica-Like Potassium Niobates

K. Nassau、J.W. Shiever、J. Bernstein1969-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

Large single crystals of and can be grown by Czochralski pulling from the melt. In the case of a small amount of excess is used to avoid incongruent crystallization. Both materials show pronounced cleavage very similar to that of mica. The electrical properties of are also very similar to those of mica, making this ma…

Thermal Expansion of Silicon and Zinc Oxide (I)

H. Ibach1969-01-01physica status solidi (b)

Abstract A new expansion cell for the three‐terminal capacitance method is developed. Length changes in the order of 10 −9 cm can be measured at samples of only 4 mm. At first the expansion coefficient of silicon (reference material) is investigated in detail from 20 to 300 °K. The work is completed by interferometric…

Theoretical Studies of the Mechanics of the Fiber-Matrix Interface in Composites

L. B. Greszczuk1969-01-01OpenAlex

This paper treats the development of pertinent theories that establish the properties of the fiber-matrix interface needed to achieve efficient composites and the development of a test technique to measure these properties. An equation is derived that relates the externally applied load to the failure mode, fiber tens…

Isotope Effect and Divacancies for Self‐Diffusion in Copper

S. J. Rothman、N.L. Peterson1969-01-01physica status solidi (b)

Abstract The simultaneous diffusion of 64 Cu and 67 Cu has been measured in copper single crystals from 890 to 1061 °C. The strength of the isotope effect f Δ K is 0.684 ± 0.014 and is independent of temperature within the experimental error. This indicates that the contribution of divacancies to self‐diffusion in cop…

Indirect Energy Gap in GaSe and GaS

E. Aulich、J. L. Brebner、E. Mooser1969-01-01physica status solidi (b)

Abstract Optical absorption measurements on thick monocrystalline samples of GaSe 1− x S x show that in these mixed crystals the lowest energy gap is indirect in the complete range 0 ≦ x ≦ 1. These results are contrary to earlier reports which indicate that GaSe is a direct gap semiconductor. In the case of GaS the ab…

Immiscibility and Crystallization in A1 2 O 3 ‐SiO 2 Glasses

J. F. MACDOWELL、George H. Beall1969-01-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Metastable glass‐in‐glass separation was observed on rapid quenching of A1 2 O 3 ‐SiO 2 melts containing from 10 to 50 mol% A1 2 O 3 . Nucleation and subsequent crystallization of mullite within the high‐alumina‐dispersed glass phase may occur either during cooling from the melt or on reheating. The metastable binary…

Profile analysis in single-crystal diffractometry

R. M. Diamond1969-01-01Acta Crystallographica Section A

It is shown that a suitable curve fitting procedure can reduce the standard deviation of intensity measurements made with a scanning diffractometer except when the intensity is large in relation to the background level. The procedure has been implemented with an Arndt–Phillips linear diffractometer, on-line to a Ferra…

Theory of block copolymers. I. Domain formation in A‐B block copolymers

D. J. Meier1969-01-01Journal of Polymer Science Part C Polymer Symposia

Abstract Microphase separation occurs in many block copolymers to give domain structures. In this first paper in a series dealing with domain formation and the consequences thereof, a theory is presented for the formation of spherical domains in A‐B block copolymers. The theory establishes criteria for the formation o…

Environmental Factors Affecting the Critical Pitting Potential of Aluminum

H. Böhni、Herbert H. Uhlig1969-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

The critical pitting potential determined potentiostatically of pure Al in 0.1 N NaCl is −0.40V (SHE). This value is not greatly sensitive to temperature (0–40°C), to small alloying additions of Mn or Mg, nor to thickness of oxide film produced by anodizing. The value is more active the higher the Cl − concentration,…

Superplasticity in the Aluminium–Zinc Eutectoid

A. Ball、Michael M. Hutchison1969-01-01Metal Science Journal

Superplastic extension of the aluminium–zinc eutectoid results primarily from grain-boundary sliding and grain rotation. Estimates of X-ray attenuation coefficients for the elements and their compounds

R.D. Deslattes1969-01-01Acta Crystallographica Section A

Some recent developments leading to improved knowledge of the distribution of oscillator strength in the photo-ionization continua of atoms are briefly reviewed. Selective comparisons between the experiments and calculations are indicated. Estimates for attenuation by compounds and solids, insofar as they depart from…

The Dissolution of MgO and Mg(OH)[sub 2] in Aqueous Solutions

David A. Vermilyea1969-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

This paper reports studies of the rates of dissolution of natural Brucite, optical grade , and commercial in aqueous solutions. Natural Brucite dissolves by means of a surface reaction requiring protons, and while some protonated ions accelerate the dissolution no inhibitors were found. Dissolution of less perfect is…

Photosensitized Electrolytic Oxidation on Semiconducting n-Type TiO2 Electrode

Akira Fujishima、Kenichi Honda、Shinichi Kikuchi1969-01-01The Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry Japan

立ち上り電位はpH4.7では-0.5V(vs.SCE)である。この電解酸化反応は従来n型半導体で報告されている電極自身の溶解反応ではなくて,水の電解による酸素の発生であることを確かめた。このことはいわゆる平衡電位より約1V以上も…

Flashover voltage of high-voltage insulators with uniform surface-pollution films

R. Wilkins1969-01-01Proceedings of the Institution of Electrical Engineers

Contamination on the surface of high-voltage outdoor insulators can lead to the formation of quasistable gas discharges, which burn in series with the resistive contaminative film. Under certain conditions, these discharges may grow to cause a complete flashover. In this paper, a model for the case of a discharge burn…

Abstract The infrared absorption spectra in the range from 200 to 700 cm −1 of cubic and tetragonal manganese ferrites, Mn x Fe 3– x O 4 , are reported. An analysis of the spectra is made with a model by which the lattice vibrations are classified into species of the point group D 2 d on the analogy of the results for…

The scaled particle theory for particles of arbitrary shape

R. Gibbons1969-01-01Molecular Physics

The scaled particle theory of Reiss et al. has been extended to hard non-spherical particles and equations analogous to the Percus-Yevick equation have been obtained for mixtures of particles of the same shape but different sizes. The resulting equation of state produces exact second and third virial coefficients whic…

Inhibition Mechanism of Medium-Sized Polymethyleneimine

Kunitsugu Aramaki、Norman Hackerman1969-01-01OpenAlex

The inhibitive effect of medium‐sized polymethyleneimines on the corrosion of iron in HCl solution is particularly good, and this effective inhibition is closely related to the angle of C‐N‐C bond or to strain in the ring as has been observed previously. The inhibition mechanism of the cyclic imines is developed furth…
