A composite system is a system formed out of different subsystems connected by interfaces. Any physical property of such a system can be described by an operator which can have a discrete matrix form or a continuous (e.g. differential) form. Some composite systems can even be formed of partly discrete and partly conti…

Abstract The effects of silane coupling agents on styrene‐butadiene rubber (SBR)‐mica composites have been studied with special reference to the technical properties and polymer‐filler interaction. Silane‐treated mica improves polymer‐filler interaction, which subsequently enhances the tensile and other technically im…

The thermal conductivity λ of phases liquid, I, II, III and the glassy crystal state of cyclohexanol has been measured using the transient hot-wire method at temperatures in the range 100–370K and at pressures up to 0·7 GPa. It was inferred from the observed temperature dependence of the thermal resistivity W (= λ-1)…

A multicomponent order parameter for surface melting is introduced which depends both on the structure of the bulk crystal and on the orientation of the crystal surface. Each order-parameter component, $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{M}({\mathrm{Q}}^{\ensuremath{\parallel}})$, corresponds to a reciprocal-…

The dependences of the resistivity rho and the Hall voltage U H of polycrystalline Ni-Cu and Ta-Cu multi-layered thin films on the layer thickness d l are discussed. The thickness dependence of rho and U H can be well understood using a simple model in which the layers are considered as parallel resistors, whereby the…

Abstract The effect of electron beam (EB) irradiation on the mechanical and thermal properties of initially amorphous and semicrystalline poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) films has been investigated. Irradiations were carried out either in a nitrogen or air atmosphere. Subsequent mechanical testing carried out at 23°C su…

Strong intensity oscillations have been found in RHEED during epitaxial growth at 77 K. This temperature is too low for thermally activated diffusion and establishes that the deposited atom uses its latent heat of condensation to skip across the surface, preferentially coming to rest at growing island edges, to achiev…

By using a simple Hamiltonian of a combined crystal field and exchange field model good theoretical fits are made to the observed rare earth anisotropy constants K in a wide temperature range and the correct values of the spin reorientation temperature in R2Fe14B (R = Sm, Er, Tm, and Yb) are reproduced. The obtained c…

The stability of the transmission response of a tripole FSS as the angle of incidence is increased from 0° to 70° is compared with that for a surface using a three-dimensional version of the element, a calthrop. For TM incidence the drift in frequency of the reflection resonance is 10% for the tripole, but only 2.5% f…

An ab initio molecular-orbital study of the dissociation energy of boron monohydride of (BH) using quadratic configuration interaction and a large basis set is presented. The results suggest that the commonly accepted value for the dissociation energy Do of BH of 78.9 kcal/mol may be low by about 3– 4 kcal/mol.

A critique is given of classical models of depinning and transport by sliding charge-density waves (CDW) in quasi-one-dimensional metals.
