A high-resolution multiple-reflection diffractometer has been built to study crystals distorted by epitaxy and defects in nearly perfect crystals. The diffractometer combines the merits of the two-crystal four-reflection monochromator (to define a narrow wavelength range with a tailless reflectivity profile) and an an…

Abstract The phase diagram of the LiCl–ZnCl2 system was determined. The system contained one intermediate compound, Li2ZnCl4; it transformed from the normal spinel to the olivine structure at 215 °C. Electrical conductivity measurements showed a high ionic conductivity of 2.0 × 10−4 S cm−1 280 °C.

Silver-indium-cadmium (Ag-In-Cd) control rod behavior in severe reactor accidents is examined with a goal of improving the methodology used to estimate reactor accident source terms. Control rod behavior in both in-pile and out-of-pile experiments is reviewed. A mechanistic model named VAPOR is developed that calculat…

Precision x-ray studies, polarization and electrocaloric measurements have been made with PST-PSN solid solutions in the temperature range −180–+80°C. The large electrocaloric effect δT = 1.0–1.7°C is due to both particular features of structure rearrangement at the 1-order phase transition in the materials and a high…

A Monte Carlo calculation has been performed to determine the transmission of broad constant-potential x-ray beams through Pb, concrete, gypsum wallboard, steel and plate glass. The EGS4 code system was used with a simple broad-beam geometric model to generate exposure transmission curves for published 70, 100, 120 an…

The phase behavior and electro-optic phenomena observed in a new system of blue phase mixtures have been determined. The mixtures, which include both cyanobiphenyl and chiral ester components, have relatively high pitch values (∼0.3 μm) but nonetheless exhibit broad blue phase temperature ranges (∼2.5°C total). On app…

A high dc field (1 and 3 kV / mm) was applied to BaTiO 3 and PZT ceramics, electrically induced microcracks occur at the grain boundaries and propagate into the grains. The number of cracks becomes larger with increasing grain size and poling field.

Electric-field-induced molecular reorientation is studied in the magnetically biased ferronematic liquid-crystal (FNLC) film. A theory derived from the free energy of the system is given. To investigate the field-induced distortion, we have measured the optical birefringence which depends on the integration of the dir…

The step-like change of the temperature at the field-induced first-order phase transition in the lead scandium tantalat (PST) ceramic is used for the electrocaloric refrigeration. The high values of the electrocaloric effect δT = 1.4 − 1.8 K at E = 15 − 25 kV/cm confirm a high efficiency of energy transformation in PS…
