Violation of the fluctuation-dissipation relation during the formation of a colloidal glass

Ludovic Bellon、S. Ciliberto、C. Laroche2001-02-01Europhysics Letters (EPL)

The relationship between the conductivity and the polarization noise is measured in a colloidal glass as a function of frequency in the range 1 Hz-40 Hz. It is found that at the beginning of the transition from a fluid-like sol to a solid-like colloidal glass the fluctuation-dissipation relation is strongly violated.…

Thin-Film Formation of Calcium Carbonate Crystals: Effects of Functional Groups of Matrix Polymers

Naoya Hosoda、Takashi Kato2001-02-01Chemistry of Materials

We report on the preparation of the thin films of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) crystals on solid matrixes, i.e., cellulose, chitosan, and chitin in the presence of an acidic macromolecule. The crystal growth from CaCO 3 solution containing poly(acrylic acid) as a soluble acidic polymer results in the formation of CaCO…

A Novel Approach to Functionalized Nanoparticles: Self-Crosslinking of Macromolecules in Ultradilute Solution

David Mecerreyes、V. Lee、Craig J. Hawker 等 9 位作者2001-02-01Advanced Materials

The intermolecular self-crosslinking of functionalized macromolecules under ultra-dilute conditions (see Figure) provides a versatile approach to the preparation of nanoparticles with very small sizes. The size and the chemical nature of the particles are easily controlled and the use of particles produced in this way…

Stability of MRI Paramagnetic Contrast Media

Sophie Laurent、Luce Vander Elst、FRÉDÉRIC COPOIX 等 4 位作者2001-02-01Investigative Radiology

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The suitability of paramagnetic complexes as magnetic resonance contrast agents depends on various factors such as their relaxivity, stability, selectivity, and the inertness toward transmetallation by endogenous ions. The transmetallation of a series of 18 gadolinium complexes by the Zn2+ io…

Yadong Yin、Younan Xia2001-02-01Advanced Materials

The self-assembly of polystyrene beads into a variety of polygonal and polyhedral clusters is reported. The Figure shows a schematic illustration of the procedure used to form these well-defined clusters under physical confinement. These aggregates will be useful as new types of building blocks in hierarchical self-as…

The magnetic properties and the low-temperature magnetic structures of the orthorhombic perovskite HoMnO 3 (space group Pnma ) have been studied on polycrystalline samples by magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements. By cooling, HoMnO 3 exhibits three singularities at T N = 41 K, T ≈ 26 K, an…

Antimicrobial properties of porphyrins

Igor Stojiljković、Brian D. Evavold、Veena Kumar2001-02-01Expert Opinion on Investigational Drugs

A large number of natural and synthetic porphyrins of diverse chemical compositions and characteristics can be isolated from nature or synthesised in the laboratory. Antimicrobial and antiviral activities of porphyrins are based on their ability to catalyse peroxidase and oxidase reactions, absorb photons and generate…

Roland Schmechel、M. Kennedy、Heinz von Seggern 等 10 位作者2001-02-01Journal of Applied Physics

In this study, the optical properties of nanocrystalline europium doped yttria, Y2O3:Eu3+ were investigated in dependence on different caging hosts such as porous MCM-41, porous silica, and porous alumina with pore sizes ranging between 2.7 to 80 nm. These results were compared to nanopowders measured in air and aqueo…

DNA-Directed Assembly of Gold Nanowires on Complementary Surfaces

Jeremiah K. N. Mbindyo、Brian D. Reiss、Benjamin Martin 等 6 位作者2001-02-01OpenAlex

The coverage of Au surfaces with Au nanowires by linking them with DNA offers great prospects for the assembly of wire structures with particular connectivity. This work presents the first example of using DNA hybridization to control the assembly of micrometer-size inorganic particles on surfaces. The Figure shows th…

Solidification of high speed steels

Mário Boccalini Júnior、Hélio Goldenstein2001-02-01OpenAlex

High speed steels are ferrous based alloys of the Fe–C–X multicomponent system where X represents a group of alloying elements comprising mainly Cr, W or Mo, V, and Co. These steels are mainly used for cutting tools, since they are characterised by their capacity to retain a high level of hardness while cutting metals…

Tuning the electron emission properties of films containing carbon nanotubes is demonstrated. Microcontact printing is used to pattern silicon substrates with catalyst, which facilitates the growth of the carbon nanotubes by the chemical vapor deposition of acetylene. The catalyst is applied in liquid form to an elast…
