For the past decade, materials research has focused on synthesizing new materials and generating new structural arrangements that exhibit specific desired properties. Some of the greatest advances in this area have come out of work on intercalation compounds, which are formed by the insertion of atomic or molecular la…

A model considering both short-range and long-range interactions for liquid crystals mixtures of rod-like and plate-like molecules is presented in this paper. The model is treated in the framework of a mean field, van der Waals-type theory. The relationship of the model to a Landau-type treatment is discussed in an Ap…

Abstract Addition of cryoground rubber (CGR) causes changes in curing characteristics (decrease in Mooney scorch time, optimum cure time, and reversion time) and shows a detrimental effect on most of the vulcanizate properties (tensile, resilience, flex, hysteresis, set, and abrasion). Tear strength, however, is not a…

The greatest value ever reported for spontaneous polarization, as high as 4.2×10 -8 C/cm 2 , is observed in DOBA-1-MBC. The relaxation frequency of this material determined from frequency dependence of the dielectric constant is higher than that of DOBAMBC by more than one order of magnitude. DOBA-1-MPC also indicates…

The static structure factor for colloidal suspensions in systems undergoing steady shear flow is calculated using response theory in the linear regime and using a fluctuating-diffusion equation in the nonlinear regime. In the second case, the intermediate-scattering function is also obtained. The theories give the str…

Abstract A mathematical model for prediction of the crystal size distribution from a continuous crystallizer is presented. The kinetic data used for the model were obtained from batch contact nucleation experiments with citric acid monohydrate. In these experiments, the distribution of growth rates as well as the init…

The shear flow of nematic Liquid crystals with a positive value of the Leslie viscosity α3 is studied theoretically. Under the assumption that the director will remain in the plane of shear, the equations governing the flow are solved numerically and the director- and velocity-profile are calculated. The validity of t…

Raman spectra were measured for a series of Na 2 O·xZnO·ySiO 2 glasses where x=O to 2 and y = 1,2, or 3. The spectra exhibit bands characteristic of sheet‐like and chain‐like strucrural units. Frequency and intensity shifts with ZnO content suggest that Zn 2+ is a simple network modifier over this composition range.
