In this article we shortly review previous and recently published experimental results that provide evidence for intrinsic, magnetic-impurity-free ferromagnetism and for high-temperature superconductivity in carbon-based materials. The available data suggest that the origin of those phenomena is related to structural…

The effects of neutron irradiation on normal state and superconducting properties of epitaxial magnesium diboride thin films are studied up to fluences of 1020 cm-2. All the properties of the films change systematically upon irradiation. Critical temperature is suppressed and, at the highest fluence, no superconductin…

Ferromagnetism is observed below 10 K in [Bi0.75Te0.125Mn0.125]Te. This material has the BiTe structure, which is made from the stacking of two Te-Bi-Te-Bi-Te blocks and one Bi-Bi block per unit cell. Crystal structure analysis shows that Mn is localized in the Bi2 blocks, and is accompanied by an equal amount of TeBi…

We theoretically study the nonlocal spin transport in a device consisting of a nonmagnetic metal (N) and ferromagnetic injector (F1) and detector (F2) electrodes connected to N. We solve the spin-dependent transport equations in a device with arbitrary interface resistance from a metallic-contact to tunneling regime,…

Power moments, modified moments, and optimized moments are powerful tools for solving microscopic models of macroscopic systems; however the expansion of the density of states as a continued fraction does not converge to the macroscopic limit point-wise in energy with increasing numbers of moments. In this work the mo…

Combining time-dependent density functional calculations for electrons with molecular dynamics simulations for ions, we investigate the dynamics of excited carriers in a (3,3) carbon nanotube at different temperatures. Following an hnu=6.8 eV photoexcitation, the carrier decay is initially dominated by efficient coupl…

A new geometry for polyoxoniobates is observed in {Nb24O72H9}15−, the largest isopolyoxoniobate cluster anion known to date. Its structural evolution from isolated Lindqvist anions [Nb6O19]8− and the cyclic pyrochlore unit [Nb6O30] through to the complex dimer [({Nb24O72H9} {Cu(en)2(H2O)}2{Cu(en)2})2]18− is discussed.
