Photo‐oxidation of poly(vinyl chloride)

Kwei‐Ping Shen Kwei1969-04-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A-1 Polymer Chemistry

Abstract The photo‐oxidation of PVC has been studied over the temperature range 30–150°C. Initiation with ultraviolet (2537A) radiation has been correlated with the presence of minute amounts of ozone. The contribution of atomic oxygen and singlet oxygen ( 1 Δ g ) molecules to the initiation mechanism is discussed. Th…

Linear Inequalities for Density Matrices

Ernest R. Davidson1969-04-01Journal of Mathematical Physics

A set of linear inequalities for the reduced two-body density matrix is presented. The general problem of finding all such inequalities is discussed. It is shown that all of the linear inequalities found so far for ensemble representability may be written as a single family of inequalities.

Aging in Tetragonal Ferroelectric Barium Titanate

R. C. Bradt、G. S. Ansell1969-04-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The aging phenomenon in tetragonal ferroelectric bairum titanate was investigated by optical microscopy and by electrical measurements. Transmission electron microscopy was used to observe in detail domain reactions which occurred during aging. Aging may be characterized as an exhaustion‐type process because of the in…

α-Isopropylmalate Synthase from Salmonella typhimurium

Gunter B. Kohlhaw、T. Richard Leary、H. E. Umbarger1969-04-01Journal of Biological Chemistry

Abstract α-Isopropylmalate synthase, the first enzyme in the biosynthesis of leucine, was purified to homogeneity from extracts of strain CV-19 of Salmonella typhimurium. From gel filtration and disc gel electrophoresis experiments it was deduced that the enzyme can exist in two physically distinguishable forms and th…

THE MECHANISM OF ACTION OF RIBONUCLEASE

Gordon C. K. Roberts、Edward A. Dennis、Donella H. Meadows 等 5 位作者1969-04-01Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

The possible mechanisms of action of bovine pancreatic ribonuclease are discussed in the light of the detailed knowledge of the geometry of the active site that has been derived from studies of inhibitor binding by X-ray diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance. When combined with a knowledge of the mechanism of pho…

Mechanical Relaxations in Mixed‐Alkali Silicate Glasses: I, Results

James E. Shelby、Delbert E. Day1969-04-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The internal friction of silicate glasses containing mixtures of Li‐Na, Li‐K, Li‐Rb, Li‐Cs, Na‐K, Na‐Rb, Na‐Cs, and K‐Rb was measured from ‐180° to 500°C at a frequency of 0.4 Hz. Values for the density, index of refraction, and dynamic shear modulus are also reported. With small additions of a second alkali, a new in…

The rate of selenium removal from tellurium by hydrogen purging

J. R. Rawling、J. M. Toguri1969-04-01The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering

Abstract The reaction between hydrogen gas and selenium dissolved in liquid tellurium is described as follows H 2 (g) + Se ⇄ H 2 Se(g) The kinetics of this reaction have been investigated at temperatures ranging between 525 and 625°C and at concentrations of selenium varying between 250 and 3,300 ppm. Under all condit…

A Study of Residual Stress Induced During Rolling

E. V. Zaretsky、R. J. Parker、W. J. Anderson1969-04-01Journal of Lubrication Technology

Subsurface residual stress measurements were made on SAE 52100 steel inner races from 207-size deep-groove ball bearings in which ΔH (ball hardness minus race hardness) ranged from −1.1 to 3.5 points Rockwell C. These bearings had been run at an inner-race speed of 2750 rpm and a radial load of 1320 lb producing maxim…

The stress at which dislocations are generated at a particle-matrix interface

Michael F. Ashby、S. H. Gelles、L.E. Tanner1969-04-01Philosophical magazine

When a hydrostatic pressure is applied to a metal containing particles or inclusions of different elastic constant, the local shear stresses which develop can be large enough to cause the interface between the particle and the metal matrix to emit dislocations. We have measured the pressure (from which we calculate th…

Peel Adhesion: Influence of Surface Energies and Adhesive Rheology

D. H. Kaelble1969-04-01The Journal of Adhesion

The adhesion properties of polymers are known to be influenced by both intermolecular forces operative at the interface and the rheological history of both bonding and unbonding. Recent adsorption and viscoelastic theories of adhesion and cohesion are implemented in a comprehensive examination of these phenomena. Eigh…

Attachment of amino groups to polymer surfaces by radiofrequency plasmas

John R. Hollahan、B. B. Stafford、Richard Falb 等 4 位作者1969-04-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Low temperature gaseous plasmas of ammonia or nitrogen–hydrogen mixtures contain NH 2 groups, or precursors thereof, formed in the plasma, which experimental evidence strongly suggests, can add to various polymer surfaces. The plasmas were established in the 0.3–1.5 torr range by radiofrequency (13.56 MHz) e…

DISTORTION OF A CHOLESTERIC STRUCTURE BY A MAGNETIC FIELD

Robert B. Meyer1969-04-01Applied Physics Letters

An experiment is described which confirms the theory of the distortion of a cholesteric structure by a magnetic field. Field effects in a sample of p-azoxyanisole doped with cholesteryl acetate were viewed directly with a microscope, and the pitch of the helical structure was measured as a function of field strength.
