Absolute Infrared Intensities of the Fundamental Absorption Bands in Solid CS2

Haruka Yamada、Willis B. Person1964-01-15The Journal of Chemical Physics

Absolute infrared intensities have been measured for ν2 and ν3 of CS2 in the solid phase. Path lengths were measured by counting interference fringes as the solid is condensed onto a cold window. The index of refraction of the solid film is estimated from the intensity of the fringe pattern on different windows of kno…

Simple Model for Some Dense Magnetic Exciton Systems

D. B. Chesnut1964-01-15The Journal of Chemical Physics

The (triplet-state) TCNQ ion radical salts and also Würster's blue perchlorate exhibit deviations from the normal behavior of typical molecular solids. These systems are believed to contain triplet excitons which are restricted to essentially a unidirectional propagation. A simple phenomenological model is presented w…

Quantum Yield of the Ferrioxalate Actinometer

John Lee、H. H. Seliger1964-01-15The Journal of Chemical Physics

The quantum yield of the potassium ferrioxalate actinometer at 365/6 mμ has been measured to be 1.26±0.03 relative to a calibrated thermopile. Comparisons of thermopiles were carried out at the Eppley Laboratory and at the National Bureau of Standards to ensure the flatness of thermopile response. Irradiations were ma…

X-Ray Diffraction Refinement of the Calcium Tungstate Structure

A. Zalkin、David H. Templeton1964-01-15The Journal of Chemical Physics

The crystal structure of CaWO4 (scheelite) has been refined with single-crystal x-ray diffraction data. For the tetragonal cell a=5.243±0.002, c=11.376±0.003 Å. Oxygen coordinates 0.1504, 0.0085, and 0.2111 correspond to Ca–O distances 2.44 and 2.48 Å and W–O distances 1.78 Å.

Neutron Diffraction Refinement of CaWO4

M. I. Kay、B. C. Frazer、I. Almodóvar1964-01-15The Journal of Chemical Physics

The CaWO4 structure has been refined, starting with the parameters of Sillén and Nylander, using two zones of neutron diffraction data. The oxygen coordinates with the origin of the cell at the W atom (4̄) are x=0.2413 (σ=0.0005), y=0.1511 (σ=0.0006), z=0.0861 (σ=0.0001). The slightly distorted WO4 tetrahedron contain…

Deuteron Intrabond Motion and Ferroelectricity in KD2PO4

H. B. Silsbee、Edwin A. Uehling、V. Hugo Schmidt1964-01-06Physical Review

The Slater theory of the ferroelectric phase transition in K${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$P${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ type crystals as modified by Takagi and extended by Senko is examined again in the light of recent measurements of parameters made on K${\mathrm{D}}_{2}$P${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$. Making full use of the measurements, and assign…

Structure of Nonlinear Optical Phenomena in Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate

John F. Ward、Peter Franken1964-01-06Physical Review

Previously available data on nonlinear optical phenomena in potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) are interpreted together with new data on the linear electrooptic effect. It is shown that second harmonic generation is dominated by energy levels in the ultraviolet ("electronic" levels) whereas the dc and linear electro…

Maximum Anisotropy Approximation for Calculating Electron Distributions; Application to High Field Transport in Semiconductors

G. A. Baraff1964-01-06Physical Review

The conventional spherical harmonics expansion of the electron distribution function has been useful in obtaining solutions of the Boltzmann equation under circumstances in which the distribution function is fairly isotropic. This same expansion is here used under conditions in which the distribution is distorted by t…

Thermal Conductivity and Phonon Scattering by Magnetic Impurities in CdTe

Glen A. Slack、S. Galginaitis1964-01-06OpenAlex

Crystals of CdTe containing 1 mole% of Mn, Fe, or ZnTe have been grown from the melt. The segregation coefficients of these impurities and of Co can be understood in terms of differences in the covalent, tetrahedral radii of the various metal atoms. The thermal conductivity, $K$, of these crystals and of pure CdTe has…

UC-ZrC (NbC) as a Reactor Fuel Material

Kazuo Yamamoto1964-01-01Journal of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan / Atomic Energy Society of Japan

As an attempt to improve the stability problem of U-carbide fuel, the solid solutions of UC-ZrC and UC-NbC were prepared. Their stabilities against water corrosion and atmospheric oxidation and their compatibility with graphite were compared with those of UC and UC2.UO2+C+ZrC (NbC) mixture was heated in vacuum at arou…

Optical studies on anodic oxide films on aluminium (1)

Sakae Tajima、Takemi Mori、Yoshimoto SHIBATA1964-01-01Journal of Japan Institute of Light Metals

The authors found that α-alumina film is produced on aluminium by anodic oxidation in the low temperature melts of bisulphates.1, 2, 3) In this paper, in order to clarify the mechanism of formation, optical studies were made for such films as well as the films formed under certain other conditions which are likely to…

Sakae Tajima、Takemi Mori、Norihide MORITA 等 4 位作者1964-01-01Journal of Japan Institute of Light Metals

Optical observations facilitate the elucidation of the structure of anodic oxide films on aluminium which are mostly of amorphous nature and thus are difficult to be analyzed by X-ray diffraction. In the previous paper, the authors clarified the process of formation and the crystal structure of α-alumina films anodical…

Determination of Surface Area of Ceramic Clay by Differential Thermal Analysis

Hrishikesh Roy1964-01-01Transactions of the Indian Ceramic Society

Differential thermal analysis has been utilised for determination of surface area of china clay and bentonite samples. It, has been observed that the amount of mechanically adsorbed H2O in kaolinite and bentonite samples varies linearly with the surface area of the samples. The amount of this adsorbed H2O has been det…

Optimizing the Design of Cluster Mill Rolling Bearings

T. A. Harris1964-01-01A S L E Transactions

The design of back-up roll bearings in cluster-type rolling mills has, historically, been dictated by past engineering trial and error experience. Thus, to cause the bearings to act, as nearly as practicable, similarly to conventionally supported bearings, the outer ring section is usually made very heavy precluding l…
