Synthesis of Aligned Arrays of Millimeter Long, Straight Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Zhen Yu、Shengdong Li、Peter J. Burke2004-08-05Chemistry of Materials

In this work, we demonstrate the synthesis of arrays of 1.5 mm long, aligned, straight single-walled nanotubes fabricated using a single furnace with methane and H2 as the feedstock. The growth of the nanotubes was terminated only by the presence of a neighboring catalyst site.

Optical Spectroscopy of Single Impurity Centers in Semiconductors

S. Francoeur、John F. Klem、A. Mascarenhas2004-08-05Physical Review Letters

Using optical spectroscopy with diffraction limited spatial resolution, the possibility of measuring the luminescence from single impurity centers in a semiconductor is demonstrated. Selectively studying individual centers that are formed by two neighboring nitrogen atoms in GaAs makes it possible to unveil their othe…

Interaction of Poly(methacrylic acid) Brushes with Metal Ions: An Infrared Investigation

Rupert Konradi、Jürgen Rühe2004-08-05Macromolecules

The complexation of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) brushes prepared by the “grafting from” technique with silver, calcium, copper, aluminum, and lanthanum ions was studied. XP and IR spectra confirmed the formation of stable complexes. The IR spectra revealed different coordination geometries depending on the nature of…

Abstract Oxygen transport was coupled with other methods to study the relationship of gas barrier to solid state structure in the PET blown bottle wall. Commercial 2‐L carbonated soft drink bottles blown under different process conditions were studied. Crystallinity determinations from heat of melting, density, glycol…

Crystal Structure of B-Amylose

Yasuhiro Takahashi、T. Kumano、Sumiyo Nishikawa2004-08-05Macromolecules

A fiber specimen of B-amylose was prepared from enzymatically synthesized amylose, which is a purely linear 1,4-linked poly-α- d -glucose. X-ray crystal structure analysis was carried out by using the newly collected intensity data, which was estimated by using imaging plate according to the new procedure. The molecul…

Crystal Nucleation of Colloidal Suspensions under Shear

Ronald Blaak、Stefan Auer、Daan Frenkel 等 4 位作者2004-08-05Physical Review Letters

We use Brownian dynamics simulations in combination with the umbrella sampling technique to study the effect of shear flow on homogeneous crystal nucleation. We find that a homogeneous shear rate leads to a significant suppression of the crystal nucleation rate and to an increase of the size of the critical nucleus. A…

Dynamic Sliding Friction between Concentric Carbon Nanotubes

Paul Tangney、Steven G. Louie、Marvin L. Cohen2004-08-05Physical Review Letters

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study mechanical energy dissipation in carbon nanotube oscillators of lengths of tens of nanometers. The principal source of friction is found to be the ends of the tubes and hence dynamical friction is virtually independent of the overlap area between tubes. As a result of t…

Process Control of Seeded Batch Cooling Crystallization of the Metastable α-Form Glycine Using an In-Situ ATR-FTIR Spectrometer and an In-Situ FBRM Particle Counter

Norihito Doki、Hiroya Seki、Kiyoteru Takano 等 6 位作者2004-08-05Crystal Growth & Design

In this paper, we report a process control strategy for the production of metastable α-form glycine crystals of a desired mean mass size by manipulating the alternating temperature profile and the final termination temperature. The seed crystals of the α-form glycine introduced were grown successfully to the size of t…

Versatile Synthesis of End-Functionalized Thermosensitive Poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazolines)

Joon Sik Park、Yoshitsugu Akiyama、Françoise M. Winnik 等 4 位作者2004-08-05Macromolecules

The synthesis of several end-functionalized poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazolines) (P i PrOx) has been achieved via cationic ring-opening polymerization of 2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline. Poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazolines) bearing primary amino groups at one chain end (Me-P i PrOx-NH 2, with M n ranging from 3600 to 9700) were obtained…

We investigate and discuss how hydrogen behaves at the edges of a graphite sheet, in particular the armchair edge. Our density functional theory-based calculations results show that, in contrast to the zigzag edge [cf., e-J. Surf. Sci. Nanotech. 2 (2004) 77], regardless of orientation, there is an activation barrier h…

Influence of Grain size on the Electrical Properties of ${\rm Sb_2Te_3}$ Polycrystalline Films

P. Arun、A. G. Vedeshwar2004-08-05arXiv

Resistance of vacuum deposited ${\rm Sb_2Te_3}$ films of thickness between 100-500nm has been measured in vacuum. It is found that the resistance of the polycrystalline films strongly depends on the grain size and inter-granular voids. The charge carrier are shown to cross this high resistivity inter- granular void by…

Long lived acoustic vibrational modes of an embedded nanoparticle

Lucien Saviot、Daniel B. Murray2004-08-05arXiv

Classical continuum elastic calculations show that the acoustic vibrational modes of an embedded nanoparticle can be lightly damped even when the longitudinal plane wave acoustic impedances $Z_o=ρv_L$ of the nanoparticle and the matrix are the same. It is not necessary for the matrix to be less dense or softer than th…
