A method has been developed for calculating characteristic fluorescence corrections in all cases involving K and L lines, based on the formula derived by Castaing for the case of one K line exciting another K line. A modification to the original formula is proposed, which takes into account more recent work on K line…

Abstract Monomolecular layers of methyl methacrylate inserted between the lamellae of montmorillonite clay were polymerized. Finely divided complexes of poly(methyl methacrylate)–montmorillonite were suspended in boiling hydrocarbons and subjected to thermal degradation at 215°C. and above, under air and nitrogen, wit…

J. M. Ziman London: Cambridge University Press. 1964. Pp. 360. Price 45s. This book is essentially an account of the consequences of the lattice periodicity in solids. Much of the ground was well tilled in the author's treatise Electrons and Phonons (Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1962) but, as a textbook, the new work…

A molecular-kinetic theory, which explains the temperature dependence of relaxation behavior in glass-forming liquids in terms of the temperature variation of the size of the cooperatively rearranging region, is presented. The size of this cooperatively rearranging region is shown to be determined by configuration res…

Abstract Copolymerization of phenyl isocyanate with ethylene oxide was investigated under several conditions. The polymers obtained with AlEt 3 alone or the AlEt 3 ‐H 2 O system as catalyst were found to be composed of two types, that is polyethylene oxide and alternate copolymer of phenyl isocyanate with ethylene oxi…

Abstract Isothermal viscosities η (at low shear rates) of polyethylene oxide fractions and blends were measured in the range from the monomer (glycol) to a molecular weight of about 10 5 and at a number of temperatures between 9 and 155°C. The fashion in which η varied with temperature was independent of molecular wei…

Abstract A simple theory is developed for calculating the contribution from thermal diffuse scattering to the absorption of high energy electrons passing through crystals. The Einstein model for a vibrating crystal is used and the incident wave is assumed to be a Bloch wave, the thermally diffuse scattered wave to be…

A new compound, Na(6)Si(8)O(19), is shown to be a thermodynamically stable phase in the Na(2)O-SiO(2) system at 1 atmosphere. The new compound melts incongruently to SiO(2) (quartz) and liquid at 808 degrees +/- 2 degrees C, and it disproportionates to betaNa(2)Si(2)O(5) and quartz at 700 degrees +/- 10 degrees C.

Further calculations on N, H, NH, and NH3 are used as a guide for the selection, in general, of symmetry types and screening parameters of Gaussian atomic orbitals in an LCAO—SCF—CI scheme. The paper also examines the sensitivity of predicted valence properties to the choice of orbital basis and to the amount of confi…

Gallium nitride was found to sublime congruently from a torsion—effusion cell when the ratio of orifice area to sample area was about 1/30 and incongruently to yield nitrogen gas and liquid gallium when this ratio was about 1/100 or less. A mass-spectrometer investigation revealed no measurable concentrations of galli…
