Structures of the Boron-Rich Boron Carbides from Neutron Powder Diffraction: Implications for the Nature of the Inter-Icosahedral Chains

G. H. Kwei、B. Morosin1996-01-01The Journal of Physical Chemistry

Results from structure refinement using neutron powder diffraction data for boron carbide samples with 10, 13, 16, and 20 at. % carbon are reviewed. Those obtained for ceramic powder samples show an apparent large vacancy concentration (as high as 25%) at the central atom position of the linear three-membered chains.…

Optimum Graft Density for Dispersing Particles in Polymer Melts

Ryuichi Hasegawa、Yuji Aoki、Masao Doi1996-01-01Macromolecules

We investigate the dispersion of polymer-grafted particles suspended in a polymer matrix by viscoelastic measurements and electron microscopy. We find that, when the graft density is low, the particle dispersion improves with an increase of the graft density, while the particle dispersion becomes worse when the graft…

Transparent Conducting Al-Doped ZnO Thin Films Prepared by Pulsed Laser Deposition

Akio Suzuki Akio Suzuki、Tatsuhiko Matsushita、Naoki Wada 等 5 位作者1996-01-01Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

Thin films of ZnO:Al have been deposited on glass substrates by a pulsed laser deposition technique employing an ArF laser ( λ=193 nm). For all experiments, a repetition rate of 10 Hz, an energy density of 1 J/cm 2 , and an irradiation time of 20–30 min (12000–18000 shots) were assumed. Optical transmittance of around…

Measurements of the complex impedance of the interface between mild steel and deaerated 1 M HCl solutions without and with the addition of different inhibitors, derivatives of benzimidazole, have been made in the frequency range of (0.1−9.5) × 10 4 Hz. Adequate structure models of the interfaces as well as some data o…

Kinetics of Formation of Monodisperse Colloidal Silica Particles through the Hydrolysis and Condensation of Tetraethylorthosilicate

Sheng-Li Chen、Peng Dong、Guanghua Yang 等 4 位作者1996-01-01Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research

Kinetic studies of the hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) during the formation of uniform silica particles were performed through determining concentrations of TEOS and silicic acid by means of gas chromatography and a conductometer, respectively. It was shown that both hydrolysis of TEOS an…

Spectroscopic Studies of Nickel(II) and Nickel(III) Species Generated upon Thermal Treatments of Nickel/Ceria-Supported Materials

Anne Davidson、J.F. Tempère、M. Che 等 5 位作者1996-01-01The Journal of Physical Chemistry

On the basis of DRS, ESR, and XPS studies, the nature and the dispersion of nickel species deposited on ceria (by hydrolysis of an aqueous solution of nickel nitrate) have been investigated upon thermal activations in air. Before thermal activation, mainly octahedral Ni II species belonging to a Ni(OH) 2 deposit are o…

An Experimental Approach to Mapping the Binding Surfaces of Crystalline Proteins

Karen N. Allen、Cornelia Bellamacina、Xiaochun Ding 等 7 位作者1996-01-01The Journal of Physical Chemistry

Porcine pancreatic elastase has been used as the model enzyme in the design and development of a crystallographic method that allows mapping of the binding surface of a protein by solving its crystal structure in a variety of organic solvents. The ultimate goal of this method is to aid in the process of drug design, w…

The Flow of Liquids in Surface Grooves

R. R. Rye、J. Adin Mann、F.G. Yost1996-01-01Langmuir

We have obtained detailed capillary kinetic data for flow of a series of alcohols with various surface tension to viscosity ratios, γ/μ, spreading in open V-shaped grooves cut in Cu with three different groove angles. The location of the three-phase contact line, z, with time always follows the formula z 2 = K (α,θ)[γ…

William S. Epling、Gar B. Hoflund、Jason F. Weaver 等 5 位作者1996-01-01The Journal of Physical Chemistry

Au/α-Fe 2 O 3 and Au/Co 3 O 4 catalysts prepared by coprecipitation with a nominal 10 atom % Au are active for CO oxidation even at temperatures below 0 °C. The surfaces of these as-prepared, powdered catalysts have been examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ion-scattering spectroscopy (ISS) to gai…

Temperature Dependence of the Eu3+ 5D0 Lifetime in Europium Tris(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)

Mary T. Berry、P. Stanley May、Hong Xu1996-01-01The Journal of Physical Chemistry

The temperature dependence of the Eu 3+ 5 D 0 relaxation rate in solid europium tris(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato) is presented. Eu 3+ emission is strongly quenched in the region of room temperature. It is proposed that thermal quenching of 5 D 0 emission is via crossover from the 5 D 0 to a ligand-to-lantha…

Investigation of Molecular and Supermolecular Structure in Template-Synthesized Polypyrrole Tubules and Fibrils

Vinod P. Menon、Junting Lei、Charles R. Martin1996-01-01Chemistry of Materials

Nanotubules and nanofibrils of polypyrrole were chemically synthesized using the pores of nanoporous polycarbonate membrane filters as templates. We have previously shown that such “template-synthesized” nanofibrils of polypyrrole can have enhanced conductivities relative to more conventional forms of the polymer (e.g…

New Syntheses of Cobalt Ferrite Particles in the Range 2−5 nm: Comparison of the Magnetic Properties of the Nanosized Particles in Dispersed Fluid or in Powder Form

N. Moumen、M. P. Pileni1996-01-01Chemistry of Materials

The size of cobalt ferrite particles from 2 to 5 nm is controlled by the reactant concentration in oil-in-water micelles. It is possible to obtain the particles either suspended in the solvent to form ferrofluid or in dry powder. When particles are isolated in a fluid, the interactions between particles are small. The…

Lithium Insertion in Hydrogen-Containing Carbonaceous Materials

Tao Zheng、Jing Xue、J. R. Dahn1996-01-01Chemistry of Materials

Heated carbon materials were made from organic precursors between 550 and 1000 °C. High capacities for lithium were found in all of the samples heated below 800 °C, which all contain substantial hydrogen. The majority of this high capacity shows large hysteresis; that is the lithium is inserted near 0 V (versus lithiu…
