The chemistry subsequent to the dielectric breakdown of SF6 under "mild" conditions has been modeled on the basis of known or estimated chemical kinetic data for the neutral reactive species postulated to be formed in the breakdown process. The emphasis is on the significance of S2FlO as an end product of dielectric b…

An analytic derivation is given of rules exactly describing the hierarchical band clustering in the spectrum of Harper's equation for various incommensurate systems. These rules, involving transformations of the incommensurability parameter phi , are shown to apply exactly for arbitrary coupling strength. The approach…

We have developed a new method to prepare lead iron niobate, Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3, by using organometallic precursors. The metal-containing sol was prepared by hydrolysis of the metal alkoxides. Homogeneous mixing of the constituents is achieved at the molecular level and densification of the ceramic occurs at temperature…

The adsorption mechanism of silane coupling agent on the colloidal silica surface is studied with spin-labeled silane coupling agent using ESR method. The density of the adsorbed silane molecules was determined to be approximately 1.5-2 molecules per 100 A2 of the silica surface in 95% ethanol solution. In addition, E…

Insulating systems employing polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene were tested for dielectric strength and time-to -break under pulsed and ramped voltages in the pulsewidth range of 0.2 to 5 μs with risetimes of 20 ns to 5 ps at a repetition rate of 500 pps. The dependence of dielectric strength and time-to-bre…

The conducting polymer field has continued its rapid expansion during the past 10 years since the discovery that an organic polymer, polyacetylene, could be doped to the metallic regime. A number of new conducting polymers have since been synthesized and many chemical, structural and physical studies have helped in el…

The orientational relationship between intergrown lamellae of tetragonal (t) BaTiO 3 and monoclinic (m) Ba 6 Ti 17 O 40 was found to be ( 1 1 1 ) t ||(001) m , (001) t ||( 1 0 1 ) m , and [110] t ||[0 1 0] m . On the basis of this relationship a model of a topotactic boundary between these two phases was constructed.
